This new / reinstated direct train was due to start in mid Dec but it doesn't appear to be bookable and I can't find any reference to it now on Eurostars website - has it been scrapped or postponed?

My two emails to them have gone unanswered...

I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that it had been postponed because of the timetable changes necessitated by the fire.

Yep, that is the case - earliest estimates that it will be re-introduced is as from Mid Feb once the Channel Tunnel is reopened.

why cant they just state this on the website rather than just take the information off completely?!
