I'm afraid we need a little more information.

You say you'll leave after 0900. It's cheaper if you leave after 0930. Is that OK? The relevant trains are

0921 Aschurch - Manchester 1159 (change Cheltenham)
0956 Aschurch - Manchester 1339 (change Worcester, Smethwick and Wolverhampton)

A current New Deal Photocard appears to give 50% off Anytime Day returns and Off-Peak Day Returns, but no reduction on tickets valid longer than one day. It's cheapest to split your journey into a number of legs where you can get a 50% discount on each leg.

But some of these Off-Peak Day Returns have restrictions in the afternoon from 1530 - 1815, so we need to know when you expect to start your return journey so we can work out the best combination for you.

If you want to get to Manchester (MAN) before 1300 with off-peak fares from Ashchurch (ASC) you are going to have to find your way to Cheltenham Spa (CNM) first, for a post 0930 departure from there. Otherwise its the 0956 departure via Worcester SH, Smethick GB and Wolverhampton arriving 1339 or 1121 via Cheltenham Spa (double back easement allowed) arriving 1359. Can't see any cheaper splits by starting in the peak from Ashchurch.

I'd suggest taking the 0921 from ASC to CNM, arriving 0930 to connect into the 0942 CNM-MAN. As the 0921 is a 'peak' You'll need to buy a Anytime Day Single for £2.20 with your New Deal Railcard (NDC) for the trip from ASC-CNM. You'll only need a single because you can take advantage of a double back easement on your return from Manchester, travelling beyond Ashchurch then coming back from Cheltenham Spa.

Then split your CNM-MAN fare at Wolverhampton (WVH).

ASC-CNM Anytime Day Single with NDC. £2.20
CNM-WVH Off Peak Return with NDC. £9.70
WVH-MAN Off Peak Return with NDC. £12.50

Total £24.40

Hmm, interesting. I'm going by NFM 06 which does show 50% discount for New Deal Railcard on SVS, SVR, SSS, SSR. Trainline based retailers concur.

One difficulty in attempting to advise holders of cards limited to specific groups, (eg. New Deal, HM Forces) is that the detailed terms & conditions are not always made available outside the relevant group.

The website is wrong. A New Deal Photocard gives you 50% of all walkup standard class fares, but has to be renewed every 3 months.
