Artcic Blasts and Two Week Heatwave

I'd take it with a grain of salt. I checked the met office for Yorkshire and the Humber and the August forecast didn't seem as extreme.

I check the weather frequently as I'm often outside painting houses, I've been half a mile from the met office when the weather forecast says it's sunny and it's actually throwing it down with rain. I think they've got a room with banks and banks of computers but no actual windows. Saying that they do seem to have got it more or less right today.

I predict that this August not only will we not have an Artcic blast but we will not have an Arctic blast either.

An Arctic Blast in August would hardly cause extreme weather, unlike in December/January - just below average for the time of year.

A heat wave actually means a prolonged period where temperatures remain at least a few degrees above the average. Technically if we have a week in January where it's 10oC every day, that would be a heat wave!

That would happen at some period in most Januarys in the far west of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly then.

And they can sod off. For whatever reason heatwaves do not appear to be treated with the same respect as other extreme weather phenomona

I feel as if the word 'heatwave' has lost its meaning over the past few years.

According to the Met, like you said, a heatwave happens when there has been 5 consecutive days with temperatures over 5 degrees Celsius. These days, on many news sites, 'heatwave' is applied to any day that feels warm/hot to them and just ONE day (e.g. 19th July 2016).

I find that tedious to be honest.

As the report is in a national newspaper, I take it to mean that the London area might be a bit warmer than average for a few days. It could well be wet / windy and/or rainy for anywhere north of Watford........

Yes I prefer the cooler weather rather than when it's stinking hot. If you are cold it's easy to put on a jersey.

You didn't spell arctic wrong, having a few slightly colder August days than the average doesn't equate to arctic temperatures was what I was implying.

The media is saying that today may be the hotest this year, over 90f. I do hope not, I can not understand this obsession with really hot weather being good. I prefer 60-70f.

The BBC have an online weather reporting facility that you can enter the name of most towns and cities in and receive a forecast, shown on an hourly basis, with information on both UV details and air quality details for five days.

Today, 12th August, for my local area, it shows a maximum of only 18 degrees Celsius.

Where exactly in the UK are these scorching temperatures in the UK meant to be? The hottest I can see for Liverpool on the 10 day forecast on a number of sites is 24 degrees (With rain).

Like some others I prefer it a bit cooler anyway, as someone already said if you are cold you can put more clothes on, if you are too hot you are stuck (I would have used a harsher word, ha ha). Add to that the fact that our office is a huge green house that gets the sun on my side from 11am onwards and has a useless air cooling system and there you have it, I hate hot weather in the UK.

I do actually like hot countries and have visited many, the thing is they are set up for it being hot and when I have been in them I don't necessarily need a great nights sleep to be up for work in the morning like I do here.

Indeed, that is true. Oddly enough I found the rainy season in the Andes to be less consistently grey and miserable than the summer months here, when it rained it did really rai though. Ha ha.

I don't understand the obsession either although I'd class 70F (21C) as hot though. I prefer 28-41f myself.

The Daily Express appears to get its terminally declining readership from those who wish to believe that an unprecedented heatwave/ice age (sometimes one followed by the other) is going to occur in the UK in a few days time : it's always a few days time, presumably because the average DE reader is not mentally equipped to look beyond that and, in any case, given the average age of the readership, they might not be around still. Of course, none of this apocalyptic stuff is anything to do with global warming, as that is an 'establishment' conspiracy.
