Arriva Yorkshire RPIs

Currently on an Arriva Yorkshire bus from York to Selby. Much to my surprise an RPI (of sorts) got on at the designer outlet. How long has this been a thing? Tbh I don’t mind it as he didn’t seem too desperate.
The only thing is it wasn’t a very effective revenue inspection as anyone who tapped on just had to say so. He didn’t have a scanner of any sort. Do they normally have a scanner? Needless to say everyone either had a valid ticket or had tapped on. He didn’t even read my season ticket, again, on a smart card, just took a glance at it.

Had one of these on a Skyline 199 a couple of years ago heading from Buxton towards Stockport. Never seen one before in my life, so shocked to see them. I know that their presence is often warned of by signs on several major operators' fleets, but I hadn't seen one in the flesh since then. I think it's more an indication of the rise of card-based bus ticket fraud.

I'm sure it's the same in other OpCos but Stagecoach Yorkshire have one "inspector" to cover all five depots. Their job is mainly to investigate drivers' behaviour rather than passengers' (ie they regularly come up short when cashing in, or have a lot of voided tickets)

First used to be the same. Then they recruited teams of RPIs. Not sure where Arriva falls with that. These days, with QR codes and the like, it's often more about detecting adults travelling on child/student tickets, or people travelling beyond any zonal boundaries, and perhaps people short faring.
