Arriva Rail - VSE

I passed the assessments with SWR.(Haven’t taken the MMI yet) applied to arriva had stage 1 and only had to do the VSE for stage 2. However I unfortunately failed the last part of the VSE.

I am still going to apply for other TOC but I’d rather not have to take the VSE again as I don’t want to jeopardise any of my chances.

So my question is, What other companies require advance testing or the VSE?

Does that fail now go against the two strike rule, or is only because it was advanced?

Does not affect 2 strike rule apart from arl applications. You can apply to anyone that doesn’t use it right away and your ARL passes should be good enough for any other operator.
Greater Anglia dont use it.
C2C used to but I don’t think they are in this current round of recruitment.
The GTR railways don’t use it afaik.
Freightliner & MTR use it as part of a pre assessment do at home thing but I don’t think that’s set in stone as for my MTR application I never got invited to do the VSE and got told I’m in the queue for a dmi.
I know lots of people must pass it but it threw me too.

I applied for both and I was invited to the assessments around about the same time. I passed ARL stage 1, then a week later had to do the assessments with SWR (apart from the ones I already took with ARL)

I’m trying to apply if anymore opportunities arise as I understand SWR is a long waiting game and I’d rather take as many chances as I can.

If you failed it again then ARL probably wouldn’t entertain a third try but it won’t affect your applications to other operators. I failed vse last February and got interviews with freightliner and greater Anglia couple months after and still in the queue for a crossrail interview. Was moving trains around for one of those companies last night so don’t be disheartened.
