A bit of a mixed bag on these from my perspective. It's a positive step that Arriva are taking the opportunity to develop some additional summer capacity on the X18 - I assume that's a commercial initiative rather than from BSIP?

The evening X15 is possibly a marginal cost way of bolstering that service and making it more attractive. However, the X30 - not sure what problem that's solving?

As for the 419... wonder what they'll get to operate that? Don't think a Pulsar would fit along there!
Scots Gap area has not been served for many years as far as I know. I think the route used to run on Wednesdays and Saturdays at one time. I recall my mother in law who was an artist, travelling from Morpeth to Mitford to paint the church. If I recall coaches were used, Keith Turns operation comes to mind and possibly Vasey of Otterburn? I would have thought a Streetlite would do the job.

It's also going to be timed to connect with trains at Newsham - so really it's designed to complement it!
I think that probably a political nod, no more. As there’s no inter-available ticket for both the bus and the train, in reality they will be serving different markets.

It’s a real shame the NECA day rover isn’t valid on the train given that POP PAYG is, but hey ho.

I'd imagine it'll be one of the baby Solos (2601-3) with a bigger bus being used on the 434 instead, if 2852/3 ever get withdrawn as they were meant to be replaced by the 5 ex Merseyside Pulsars.

On the X30, surely a better resource would be to have a bus route linking the station with some form of through ticketing rather than a duplicate of the X10/X11. The X8, X10 and X11 are likely to struggle enough as it is when the train opens, as it's overbussed for just Cramlington, adding the X30 into the mix is just going to make things even worse. It's not like the X10/X11 are exactly around the world.

The X7 buses I see locally have some really low numbers lately from the impact from Seaton Delaval's opening ie 3 people heading towards Newcastle at Gosforth Park at 2pm the other day being the last I seen.

Believe it will be saloon operated. The timings of each trip line up perfectly with gaps in two of the current Saturday 777/X16 diagrams.

I recall Vasey's operating it with lightweight Bedfords (YRQs?), and then Northumbria with LHs, so all a bit shorter than a Pulsar :D

I found my June 1974 United timetable which shows a similar route being run by Batty’s six days a week though not via Whalton. I think that Ford or possibly Bedford lightweight buses were used certainly nothing the length of a Pulsar nor as wide. A small Solo would be ideal.
Must try and take a ride as I suspect it might be a game of spot the passenger after so long without a bus service to many of these communities.

Last time Scots Gap was served to my knowledge was around 2017 by PCL Travel, to start with, under PCL it was the 79 from the Newcastle Airport/Kingston Park area to Morpeth but was quickly changed to just run a circular on Wednesdays and Saturdays, before it's final form being a diversion of their M1 service from Morpeth to Thropton on Wednesdays (the rest of the time, the M1 was just the X14 route but running in the gaps in that service and effectively connecting up with the 15 at Rothbury/Thropton).

It doesn't say what the X18 additions are but they've operated previously and I think been funded by Northumberland - didn't Arriva fail to win the work last year so didn't provide the uplift?
Travelsure operated additional journeys on the X18 between Alnwick and Berwick, with a deviation through Howick, when coupled with the 418 and Arriva's X18, provided a near hourly service up and down that stretch of the coast. That service last operated in Summer 2023, as Travelsure stopped public services at the end of 2023, with the standard 418 and Arriva X18 operating through the Summer of 2024. The only boost in 2024 was Borders Buses operating a Sunday service on the 418 between Alnwick and Belford. Don't know whether or not these extra services from Travelsure were commercial or not though.

Borders Buses 418 operates Monday to Saturday all year as Wooler - Belford - Alnwick and on Sundays as Belford - Alnwick 3 journeys each way. Travelsure also ran throughout the year. I think that during the summer some of their journeys extended to/from Berwick but could be wrong. Both Borders Buses and Travelsure operate(d) on behalf of Northumberland County Council.

Yes, these were numbered as X18.

Not on Sundays as far as I remember.

Mondays-Saturdays, it's two return journeys between Wooler and Alnwick via the Coast, and one between Belford and Alnwick via the Coast.

Arriva has announced service changes from 6 April for both Whitby/Cleveland and County Durham.
Whitby:
Service 9 Middlesbrough to Overfields: Minor changes to departure times on early morning journeys will take place to improve reliability.

View 9 timetable

Services 28/28A/28B Middlesbrough to Guisborough/Stokesley & Service 29 Middlesbrough to Marton: A revised timetable will be in place on both services.

View 28 timetable

View 29 timetable

Service 62 Middlesbrough to Redcar: A revised timetable will be in place. Additionally, departures from Regent Walk in Redcar will now use stand immediately adjacent to Alma Parade, before the crossing.

View 62 timetable

Service 63 Middlesbrough to Redcar: A revised timetable will be in place.

View 63 timetable

Service 81 Markse to Guisborough: A revised timetable will be in place.

View 81 timetable

Service 95 Sleights to Whitby Stainsacre: This service is revised in both route and timetable due to updated weight limit restrictions expected to be in place on Whitby Swing Bridge. As a result, Service 95 will operate both ways via Prospect Hill & Bagdale and will no longer serve Church Street. Regrettably, due to this additional journey time, buses will also be revised to omit Eskdale Estate and Sainsburys car park. Service 95 will terminate at the roundabout on the A171 outside of Sainsburys instead. Revised Service 96 (operated by 21 Transport from the same date) will additionally serve Eskdale estate and Church Lane, maintaining bus provision in these areas.

View 95 timetable

Service 96 Whitby to Lealholmside: This service will no longer be operated by Arriva and will instead be operated by 21 Transport on behalf of North Yorkshire Council, with a revised route and timetable in place.

Services X4/X4A Middlesbrough-Redcar-Loftus-Whitby: We are introducing additional Sunday daytime journeys, operating between Redcar, Loftus, and Whitby, improving the frequency of service up to every 30 minutes, daily, for the duration of the summer. Additionally, a revised timetable will also be in place for Monday to Saturday.

View X4/X4A timetable

Service X12 Middlesbrough – Durham – Newcastle: A revised timetable will be in place. In addition, due to low demand, the 0727 and 0827 Saturday journeys between Chester Le Street and Durham will be withdrawn.

View X12 timetable

Services X93/X94 Middlesbrough – Guisborough – Whitby – Scarborough: A revised timetable will be in place, with the usual summer frequency enhancement also starting from this date. Buses will run up to every 30 minutes combined, with additional journeys operating between Whitby and Middlesbrough, with a small number of additional early Sunday morning journeys.

Also, we are pleased to announce that from the same date, we are responding to customer requests for later journeys between Whitby and Scarborough too. A new evening timetable will therefore be in place, offering journeys up to 11pm.
County Durham:
We are planning changes in County Durham and Darlington from Sunday 6th April. These changes come following a punctuality review across our network of services, along with feedback received from customers following a recent consultation on the 56 service.

Service 1 – Darlington to Bishop Auckland and Tow Law - Minor timetable changes will be introduced, with additional running time added at peak times to assist with delays in the Darlington area.

Service 3 – Darlington to Skerne Park – Minor timetable changes will be introduced.

Service 5 – Darlington to Bishop Auckland – Timetable changes will be introduced to improve punctuality. Journeys departing Bishop Auckland on an afternoon will be revised to create a more evenly set of departure times.

Service 6 – Durham to Cockfield and Barnard Castle – In response to customer feedback, the 0602 departure from Durham will extend beyond West Auckland to Evenwood.

Service 8 / 8A – Darlington to Spennymoor and Ferryhill – Minor timetable changes will be introduced to improve punctuality.

Service 17 – Darlington to Mowden - The first journey on a Monday to Friday in both directions will operate upto 10 minutes earlier, this is following feedback received to ensure school children arrive in time for the start of the school day at Hummersknott Academy.

Service 19 – Darlington to Faverdale - A revised timetable will be introduced with revised running times due to increasing traffic congestion being experienced in the West Auckland Road and Faverdale areas.

Service 22 – Durham to Peterlee and Sunderland – Minor timetable changes will be introduced to improve punctuality.

Service 23 – Peterlee to Hartlepool – Minor timetable changes will be introduced to improve punctuality.

Service 24 – Durham to Peterlee and Hartlepool - Minor timetable changes will be introduced to improve punctuality.

Service 43 – Durham to Esh Winning - Minor timetable changes will be introduced to improve punctuality.

Service 49 / 49A – Durham to Brandon - Minor timetable changes will be introduced to improve punctuality.

Service 56/56A – Durham to Ferryhill, Bishop Auckland and Tindale Crescent.
Thank you very much who shared their thoughts on a possible route change to the service within the Bishop Auckland area.

Following on from the feedback received during the survey, we will be looking to introduce a new one way loop for the service within the Bishop Auckland area, which was based on a result of 65/35% in favour for the one way loop, allowing all current links and areas to be served.

As a result, a new timetable will be introduced throughout the route, with the service operating to Tindale Crescent before serving Bishop Auckland. All journeys will now provide this link, increasing the number of early morning buses on this service to Tindale Crescent and the southern end of Bishop Auckland Town Centre.

Additionally, following from several requests in the consultation, a new later departure from both Tindale Crescent and Bishop Auckland will be introduced on this service. Evening journeys on service 56A will also be slightly revised, following changes to the 56 service.

Service 58 – Durham to Hartlepool - Further changes to the service are introduced from this date, these will result in most journeys operating 5 minutes later in both directions, designed to better coordinate the service with the 56 and X12 between Durham and Coxhoe.

Service 64 – Arnison Centre to Sherburn - Minor timetable changes will be introduced to improve reliability.

Service X12 – Newcastle to Durham and Middlesbrough - A punctuality review of this service has been carried out in the aim to improve reliability, especially around peak times for journeys leaving the Middlesbrough and Durham areas.
We will continue to operate up to 4 buses per hour between Durham and Coxhoe on a more evenly spaced timetable combined with services 56 and 58.

Very intrigued by 21 Transport taking on the 96, that's a lot of empty running from Selby, even factoring in that they operate the 190 from Malton meaning changeover between drivers in Pickering/Malton.

Their buses and drivers aren't all based at Goole (head office has moved from Selby), they have outstations for the services that are further afield. Although there's nothing registered up near Whitby as yet, that could change in the next few weeks.

Don't they have an outstation near Malton for the 190?

Going off the tracking for the 190, they seem to outstation the bus for that service in Foxholes where Foxholes Garage/Wolds Stoves is.

I would hazard a guess that the 96 will now end up being the same bus with the same driver all day.

You would have thought so, but there isn't one listed on VOSA – only Goole, Knaresborough and Skipton. Interestingly, there's an application pending for a new licence for "21 Buses", registered office at the same address in Goole, but no details of operating centres.

The bus running the 96 currently runs a school journey from Castleton into Whitby, then empty to Lealholm, three return journeys from Lealholm to Whitby and back taking 55 minutes each way, then - on schooldays, it runs empty back to Whitby, does a school journey out to Castleton, then empty back to Whitby - on Saturdays and holidays, it runs in service back to Whitby and then sits for an hour - then one last run in service back to Lealholm.

Presumably the 21T diagram will interwork with the same school service, but if so then it looks very tight to extend the route out to Eskdale Road, which is a 15–20 minute round trip – I can't see how they can incorporate that into the timetable and still manage 3 return journeys in between the school runs, unless there's a ridiculous amount of slack in the timetable currently.

Tracking also shows buses on the 190 running up the A169 towards Kirkby Misperton as well as near Foxholes.

Interesting. I wonder how long 21T will last on the route before either North Yorkshire Council steps in or Arriva takes it back. They didn't last too long on the 11 through Settle before the Council took it back.

Also, that timing to Eskdale Road and back in high summer or festival weekends is hilariously optimistic when trying to cross the swing bridge.

Why do you think there's any need for the council to step in? 21T handed back the 11 in Ribblesdale, maybe they were having trouble resourcing the route so far from the main base, or maybe it wasn't as profitable as they had hoped, I don't know the reason, but as far as I'm aware it was entirely their choice and not the council taking it off them.

Operating so far away from any outstation comes with problems, especially for a smaller company like 21T.

Arriva North East has announced some changes to Day Rover Fares:
Durham Day Rover
£4.00
£5.00
Northumberland Day Rover
£5.00
£6.00
Tyne & Wear Day Rover
£6.00
£6.80
TNE Day Saver
£6.80
£7.50

There are no changes to weekly or longer versions of these tickets, those prices will remain as per current. U22 day tickets are also unchanged.

Considering the £2.50 single ticket, the Durham, Northumberland and Tyne & Wear Rovers are still the cheapest option if making three journeys in the respective zone.

They ran the 11 very well from what I saw, but I’m told they had trouble finding a permanent site locally that could be registered as an operating centre.

While unconventional, their model seems to be working for them.

Believe Arriva are keeping the 323 to Castleton and have chucked the 318 to Ugthorpe which requires a minibus and will go with the 96 to 21T. You can run the 323 with a big bus as its simply Danby & Castleton, hence will interwork with the 95 now and will be worked by (on paper) the spare Evora at Whitby.

10 Evoras are due for Redcar depot, diverted from the North West order, for the X4 this year - presently delayed until sometime in the summer now. These are Temsa replacements hence the recent swap of ex-Redcar Streetlites to Birkenhead for their fleet of Pulsars now at Stockton.

Not sure which area you're talking about, but the services North of Tyne have been quite reliable over the last six months since the takeover. The buses while not looking great on the outside are generally clean on the inside. Lack of investment over the last ten years is showing though and something that won't be fixed overnight sadly.

By his name I'd guess Whitby. The 95/96 have been a shambles in recent years to be fair, even worse since the Solo went through the bridge.

Ah, I had missed that. Good news, the Streetlites were never up to the job of the X4 with its steep hills, and they could get very cramped – the Pulsars are more suitable but they are showing their age now so new Evoras will be very welcome.

318S passes to Coatham Coaches after the Easter Holidays. 96 looks to be standalone from looking at the new timetable, given the last trip from Lealholmside to Whitby arrives back too late to do an afternoon school service in Whitby.
