Arriva Bus Order

The routeONE magazine facebook page has given the Arriva order for 2014.

Arriva UK Bus has placed £40m of orders for 236 buses to upgrade its core fleet during 2014.
The bulk of orders are with Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and Wrightbus. All will have free Wi-Fi and 104 buses will form part of Arriva’s premium ‘Sapphire’ fleet.
Significantly, the ADL Enviro200s have a “revolutionary new automated manual transmission” reducing fuel consumption and emissions by around 13%, ensuring a performance on par with hybrids. The system has Low Carbon Emission Bus Certification, qualifying for extra BSOG.
The order is for: 94 ADL Enviro400 double-deckers; 40 ADL Enviro200 midi buses; 70 Wrightbus StreetLite Micro Hybrid single deckers; 27 StreetLite Micro Hybrid midi buses and five Optare Versas for Yorkshire Tiger. The order also sees a change in policy, moving towards greener buses, and breaks a long-standing tradition of ordering VDL buses (pictured).

Are those 236 new buses all that Arriva are ordering during 2014?

Based on a fleet strength of 5,900 buses, that's pretty poor, at those quantities it implies a 25 year vehicle life. Realistically, the quantity of new buses required to keep up with other groups should be more in the region of 450 new buses.

That level of investment is someway behind Arriva's peers i.e. Stagecoach, First Group & NX

Based on a fleet strength of 5,900 buses, that's pretty poor, at those quantities it implies a 25 year vehicle life. Realistically, the quantity of new buses required to keep up with other groups should be more in the region of 450 new buses.

The fact is that many of the Arriva fleets have received a lot of new vehicles over recent years.

For instance, Arriva North East has received steady investment over the last 5 years (2008/9 to 2012/3) consisting of c.250 vehicles. With a fleet size (I think) of c.550, then you've an average fleet age of 11 years.

However, the previous 5 years 2003/4 to 2007/8, then you had only probably about 50 vehicles in total. I know that North West has also had a lot of investment over the period but can't comment on other fleets

No, as in previous years, Arriva also orders vehicles throughout the year. This is just their major order being announced.

One thing I hadn't taken in to consideration was that around 1600 of the 5900 fleet strength are based in London. Obviously further new buses would be ordered as additional as/when tenders came up for renewal
