here's an ITAL cross country thread that may give you an idea of things if you want to look over it for background info - also a new thread just been posted a short while ago ref ITAL - seems to involve an incident from I think Sept 2025 - so that may give you some idea on timescales of things if so. I thought usually ITAL were faster off the blocks than that but maybe not always the case.

Thanks for the information. I’ve accepted that this will (hopefully) be expensive rather than a prosecution.

I’ll keep this updated if and when I get more so that future people can use this as a reference too.

Hi All,

We have a resolution. ITAL have immediately offered a settlement. It is not as expensive as I had calculated but it’s still a lot of money.

That’ll teach me to do better personal admin!

This is positive.
But it can be worth checking if the sum requested is correct.

Do you think it accurately reflects the fares involved after railcard expired albeit at the high cost anytime single price?

If not from what we see they are usually open to correcting the sum.

The way to do that usually advised on here is to write back politely asking if they can give you a breakdown of the travel and associated fares so you can check it against your own records, or some such wording, whist indicating that you do intend to pay anything owed.

However I do note you say you feared it might be higher.

My railcard expired in 2021 and my calculation had the fares at closer to £6k…

I am quite content (albeit now poor) to pay what they’ve asked and move on?

Sounds fine. You have obviously done your figures and weighed it up so all good in that regard.

Their costs fee seems large but I’m sure they would argue they had to examine a lot if records to investigate your case or some such reasoning

Only thing I’d say is keep all paperwork and proof of payment long term eg 6 years in the unlikely event you ever need it again.

Hopefully no further impact from this than to your bank balance
