A friend is planning a day return from Arlesey to Reading, leaving approx 15.00 and returning at 22.00.

Are they any restrictions on trains out of Paddington in the evening peak using the outward portion of a day return or is it only with the return portion?

Cheers

Or even split at WGC to save a further £2. Every train that calls at PBR calls at WGC, and a few more in the peaks.

It seems there is a huge premium, not to cross the viaduct, but to go 3 miles through the tunnels between Welwyn North and Knebworth of £9 on the Reading ticket, which is insane and illogical, and therefore quite normal for UK railway ticketing.

Thanks Sonic2009 and Yorkie, I would never have thought of that!

Saving will be slightly less as he has a Network Card but will suggest this to my friend

Cheers

No problem :)

As I often say, it is rare that I buy a ticket from my origin to my destination, as it is usually cheaper to either split the journey into a combination of tickets to lower the price, or to buy for a longer journey in order to get a ticket priced by a more reasonable company with less draconian restrictions or more generous routeings available.

If you buy a ticket from A to B, then unless you are doing a very simple local journey, the chances are you'll be ripped off and effectively defrauded by the TOCs sadly :(
