We were at King's Cross today on account of the kids wanting to see the Harry Potter trolley in the wall ( it's been moved again; back to between 8 and 9 but in the next passageway along from where it originally was )...

They say that J K Rowling got confused about the platform numbering, but it turns out she had just predicted the renumbering that will take place following the next re-signalling.

When the main shed is renumbered from 1 - 9, and the suburban shed becomes 10 - 12, the 9 and 3/4 sign will finally be in the right place...

BTW, will this major London tourist attraction be behind all the gatelines eventually?

It should be, unless even after having 9 3/4 now able to be put in the 'right' place, they decide to stick it somewhere outside!

Or, perhaps they should sell special souvenir platform passes? Of course, they might find an awful lot of Harry Potter fans never exit the station again!

Are you sure they are renumbering the platforms? Because if you look at the brand new signage on the footbridge (not yet public) it states "Platforms 0 - 7" - plus on the new platform ends, everything is labelled as it is now (they don't look very temporary).

Not now, but when Kings Cross is next resignalled - that will be years away yet, as part of the transfer to regional operations centres...

Or they might find a lot of them do exit the station - pushed on a gurney by paramedics having knocked themselves out cold!

Nice as it is to think they'd go through the wall, I was referring more to the amount of people who would ask to get access to the platform before boarding a DOO train to Peterborough!

Bearing in mind a diesel probably coasts into the station, and that the only mass ejection of fumes is as it accelerates to leave the station, this alone would not cause too much of a mess, but would still acumulate over time.

But of course if an HST is stabled for any length of time in a platform then the engine is still turning over then this is what will cause the mess on the roof. Mad cap idea, but what about inventing a carbon capture device either on board or external to the locos. A flexible tube could be plumbed into a train while idleing, to capture the fumes which would go into a retention tank.

Its worse when they shut them down then start them up again. lots of mess everywhere.. Though I do believe they have made the gaps in the top of the roof wider during the refurb to let more out/circulate air better. Well that was what we were originally told anyway.

Are the dark bits on the roof (from the inside) solar panels? If so, does anyone know how much power they will generate?

If not, what are they?

The main train shed roof?

The Kings Cross project will feature a 240kWp (kilowatt peak) capacity, meaning that the roof will generate approximately 175,000 kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity per year. The solar PV cells will be integrated into 1,392 glass laminate units that will form part of the new glass roofing structure over the platforms and concourses. The area of roof that will be covered with the solar PV glass laminate will be approximately 2,300m2.
