Areas with no rovers

So how do people go about "bashing" in the areas that have no rovers. And I don't mean an all line rover. For example I cannot find any rovers for Woking - Basingstoke area and most of the Southern/Southwest trains south of zone 6. Do people buy weekly season tickets?

My answer is not to go bashing for any intesive period there! All the units on the example quoted can be pretty much done on a Travelcard between Waterloo and Clapham Junction, which is far enough in my book. :P

For the odd journey I have to do, I'll just buy a suitable ticket.

You have a Day save for southern (If they feel like running trains) and a Kent rover gets you around most of the Southeastern territory outside of zones 6.

I didn't notice the single line of text on the page which says 'The day save is no longer available.' I have a feeling it would have been more successful if you could pick it up on the day rather than 7 days in advance.

That sounds very much like something that Sir Humphrey would come up with in order to avoid doing something that they didn't want to do in the first place.

What pages are you looking at? The Southern website is still claiming it is only "temporarily unavailable" and can still be bought at certain Tourist Information Offices.

The Daysave is still available, I used one last weekend! If you press the yellow 'Buy Rail Tickets' button on the homepage of the Southern website, there is then an option for Daysave, to the right of Season Tickets.

If I wanted to do some SWT Units I would do a return from say Bristol Temple Meads to Eastleigh and normally I add a return from Southampton Central to Lymington Pier incase a required unit is on the route!

A strategic weekly season ticket would certainly do the trick. I use the word strategic in that you would need to consider the start & end points so as to maximise the number of alternative routes you could travel on.

It's more of a problem in & around London outside of the area that's covered by the zones. Another area where it's awkward to bash anything is Anglia (between the London area & Ipswich) as there aren't any local rovers.

I'm sure there was a post by someone on here or elsewhere wo'd tried to buy one at a Tourist Information Office and they were out of stock or something like that.

Thanks - that's very interesting to know, especially when elsewhere on the Southern website, it claims "Please accept our apologies that DaySave is temporarily unavailable for purchase on our website".

There are very good value Route Barnham 7 day season tickets e.g. Wye to Beaulieu Rd for around £65 or Weymouth to Margate for around £85. These have validity up the Brighton Mainline as far as Redhill which is now in the contactless/ oyster area.

It was the south Essex area that was an issue for me, I finished up paying separately to do all the branches, don`t think there`s every been a day rover for that region

I was not aware of the Daysave so thanks for that. Just need them to go back to work now before looking at getting one of them.
Seems such a shame that South West and as already mentioned (Anglia) not having rover tickets available for their areas nearer to London. You can only do WAT-CLJ and LST-SRA so many times before being bored. The only saving grace for SWT is when chasing the 455s you had several stations within in the Zone 1-6 to utilise maximum scoopage.

Travelcard - Hounslow loop and Kingston loop allows you to do the 455s, 450s and 458s. You don't have to limit yourself to Clapham Junction - Waterloo.

444s and 15X's can be covered by the excellent value Severn and Solent Rover.

456s are the tricky ones, but really one should have done a majority of them when they were with Southern and news came out that they were heading to SWT. They work some certain peak 10-cars so they can be done on a Travelcard. Once the 707s arrive, there should be more of the 10-cars on suburban routes so they will be easier to get on a Travelcard.

Also i find most Ticket Offices and Guards will normally be happy to sell Southern Daysave tickets.

Outside of rover areas i personally just buy lots of Single and Return tickets.
