Following on from previous discussions you may have noticed that my highest bugbear is litter.

Are we becoming a dirtier country or do you think there's less litter about than there used to be?

What's the solution to reduce littering?

I'd be interested in your views.

Biggest bugbear, not biggest worry.

Bugbear - a cause of obsessive fear, anxiety, or irritation

Worry - the state of being anxious and troubled over actual or potential problems

So, I'm pleased for you that litter is the main thing about which you have cause with which to be obsessed, fearful, anxious, or irritated.

So many other people have far greater life issues about which to be obsessed, fearful, anxious, or irritated.

Irritated, yes.

In terms of worries, I have a few. I don't worry about litter, I just don't like it, and funnily enough I don't know of anyone who does. I know of plenty who are irritated by it, as I am a member of my local community forum group.

Maybe where you live is nice and clean, but if you too lived in Wakefield, your stance on the subject may well be different.

I make no apologies for my views (or standards).

I have a rather draconian attitude to punishment and think that litterers should be shot on sight, and then fined for making a mess. ;)

seriously though I would make the guilty clean the place on a community order, say 2 month and 6 months for each additional occurrence.

And you are correct about Wakefield, it's guilty of giving a s***hole a bad name. :D

Can't argue with any of that.

Been to southern Europe recently? Sicily, whilst beautiful and friendly, was dirty and litter strewn .

OK, the UK's not quite up to Swiss standards bit we're in the top half easily.

More about litter? Seriously? Two threads this week on the same subject. I agree with Zoidberg - obsessed to the point of zealotry.

I am afraid the forum rules prevent me from responding in the manner in which i would like as i would be banned. Therefore I will simply use this face thingny to express my thoughts:

Like I said, if being unhappy about the dirty state of this country makes me "obsessed", then so be it.

I'm sure more people around the UK are more concerned about litter than what you post on here. I could say you're obsessed with photographing trains, but don't.

This thread is under General Discussion, so what's your point?

If litter doesn't bother you, fine. It bothers me, and at our local Community Forum meetings, it clearly bothers a lot of local residents as it's the main topic month after month.

You may be lucky and live in a clean town, so it may not be an issue to you. Respect the fact it's an issue to others.

Also, interesting to note that on another thread about litter started by another member, you're nowhere to be seen with your berating comments, so am I to take it this is personal?

Yes
You only have to look at the state of Manchester Piccadilly gardens

Agreed, that place is appalling, especially at night.

At night, I somewhat expect it, but on a summer Saturday afternoon it is also pretty dire.

I had a quick look around Liverpool city centre today. Even at 5pm, as the shops were closing, it is really quite clean - occasionally a stray coffee cup, but no large scale amounts of litter.
I'm sure it wasn't so clean a few years ago.
(There aren't really any large open areas where people congregate, like at Piccadilly gardens, to do a direct comparison)

Yes but I've yet to find a country I'd consider to be as dirty as here.

You should take a look at some of the Eastern European countries away from the main tourists traps. Or indeed the less affluent areas of Paris. In fact go to any less affluent area in any country and it will be at least as manky as the typical UK council estate.

The only real difference on this front is that our main touristy areas are less well kept than some other nations - we really do let ourselves down on that front.

Litter wardens seem to be getting more common, they spring out of nowhere and hit litter louts with a £75 fine
