Are train drivers allowed to keep the internal cab door open when the train is in operation?

I've been asking a lot about cab rides and saw something related to this, and it would allow me to see the driver operating in the cab while being out the cab myself (so no need for a cab pass... hopefully).

The short answer to this is No, in the interests of safety of both driver, train crew and passengers onboard.

There was a person from 2010 who managed to see the cab while the train was moving because the driver intentionally left the internal cab door open

Times have changed

In the past you could ride upfront with the driver no questions asked in BR days, now you can’t.

2010 is quite a long time ago! Things were strict then but arguably stricter now.

If you want a cab ride, try contacting a heritage railway. I got a free 37 cabride when I was 13 by emailing a diesel group who kindly invited me for a ride.

Not correct. It was strictly forbidden in BR (and pre-BR days) as well.... although people did get away with it from time to time.

Enforcement was certainly less strict. As a kid, my brothers and I were invited into the cab of a 142 from Huddersfield to Penistone. Surprisingly there was room in the cab for three boys aged (I think) 4, 8, and 10 alongside the driver, and our dad in the cab doorway!

Back in BR times aviation wise pilots left the doors open at cruise so you can see how tight things have become since both of those days. Plus you wouldnt want a random idiot to run into the cab and start trying to pull levers and all in an attempt to control or cause harm

I presume like planes the risk of hijacking is deemed too great . I know a train has never been hijacked in the UK
