Stored slammers?

zImge1.jpg

I was trundling around Google Earth and followed the line under the Severn Tunnel - haven't travelled that route yet - when I found these on t'other side of the Severn. There're some more all around the site and some with what looks like a couple of locos attached.

It's near Caerwent Lat 51°36'38.58"N Long 2°44'51.54"W

Accidentally came across Long Marston too but hardly anything stored there.

They would have been awaiting scrap - JT Lanscapes has cut up a large number of units at Caerwent.

The ones with pant's and the grey-er roofs certainly look like 312's to me.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, isn't that Crick that the timber trains from Scotland go to?

There's some more stuff if you go further up the line.

Looking about, there's stock scattered all over the area.

Looking where I am, my guess they were taken last year, as there's a MML 9-car set in the sidings at Laira - that was used last year for the summer VXC services.

HST, acctually. It was left in the sidings at Laira when it had a failed power car. It was left sitting there for 3 days without being started up, so when MML were ready to collect it... it didn't start. MML had to send another 2 power cars down to pull it, so 4 power cars on one Set! :)

Anyway, isn't it Carlisle-Chirk?

I think this was the last place in the country where the sun hadn't burnt through by this afternoon. The newly refurbished rake of log wagons brought up from Shirebrook yesterday were used on the 6Z57 Carlisle-Chirk. 57309 comes south at Elmsfield with the colourful train.

Thats not 100% true.

The fact the HST power car wouldn't start was due to the failure that happend a few days earlier like you stated, I don't get why they would send out 2 more Power cars when only one failed.

IIRC, it was made up into a 9-car set actually for the summer VXC runs, an extra TGS was added at the other end, so that it was equal with the GNER sets being used, as they are normal 9-car sets anyway, was nothing to do with a broken down set. Anyway, if power cars break down, they're put into the sidings at the back of the depot, not at the front next to Embankment Road. Those sidings are used for sets coming into the depot at the end of the day after going through the washer & for general shunting and changing cars in sets.
