I did this tour and the Problem was it was a one way tour meaning, you had to buy a single back to where you live, so I paid £x to get to Crewe on the Sunday morning then £35+ to get from Basingstoke to Leeds again. I'm NOT complaining, it was a great day out, I had lost of fun and I'm very thankful to GBRF for running it. But with the OP's concerns you still end up splashing out £££ to get there and back.

On another note something I noticed not so long ago was the Lack of Leeds/York to London charters (correct me if I'm wrong havent had much time to check recently), and the VAST amount of London to York Charters. I wouldn't mind a charter or two down the ECML and a day in London.

Do GBRF (or other firms, like WCR or EWS/DBS advertise these "movement" trips anywhere? I looked on their website but could not see anything mentioned?) I know they do provide crew for some railtour charters.

In the case of the GBRf trip from Crewe, IIRC it was purely done "on-line" with a Facebook page and announcements put out on various forums and "gen groups". It might have been mentioned on their website but most of the people who travelled on it were likely to have found out by one of the aforementioned means or by word of mouth from somebody who got the information from those sources.

TBH I would not say there is a hard and fast rule about where to find out about such trips as they do not crop up very often, it is just a matter of keeping your ear to the ground or your eye on the internet!

It is also probably worth keeping an eye on the tour operators such as UK railtours , Pathfinder Tours , or UK Steam for all steam trips, though of the actual operating companies West Coast do advertise their own tours.

EDIT:
It is also sometimes possible to get "part fares" between certain stations on some trips depending on loadings but I would not recommend doing that unless you have spoken to the company concerned beforehand to make sure that they can accommodate you. By doing this of course you will need to make your own way back from wherever you get off.

Regarding the GBRF trips which ran last year, anybody who regularly logged into the WNXX forum would have been well aware of them (along with motive power, route, timings, ticket prices, etc) in advance of them running.
