TfW have recently posted the December 2020-May 2021 timetables on their website.

The Bidston to Wrexham timetable is shown as almost back to its normal hourly frequency, with the odd evening train missing, however, all but two trains in each direction start/end to/from Wrexham General, with only a very early morning and the last train at night serving Wrexham Central.

Is this closure by stealth, with just a parliamentary type service provided?

Not operating to Wrexham Central doesn’t save a unit.

I’d suggest it’s a typo rather than anything else. There seems to be little point in closing Wrexham Central, given it probably generates quite a bit of traffic (in normal times) & no real saving.

The only advantage would be to ease the turnround time at Wrexham by about 4 to 5 minutes.

This is currently happening and put down to increased time taken for social distancing in view of the tight turn round times.

That has been the case since September, and as Philipe posts is a temporary measure due to Covid, and was clearly stated on the TfW website.

Do you really think that the Welsh Government would want to have any association with closing railways??

Out of interest, can the Welsh government, Labour, close a station under devolved powers, or would Conservative power in Westminster have the final say?

With TfW opening stations out in the middle nowhere it would be strange to close a station right in the middle of a town.

In normal times, the proximity of the station to the town centre must drive a few extra fares (i.e. closing it would be false economy).

It's a busy station but due to covid timings for turnarounds it has had to close except for 2 services a day.

Until the covid situation is resolved & things return to normal timings I can't see the situation changing, the future issue will be the 230's being to long for Wrexham central & they lack SDO to enable them to run into central.
Surely just lengthen the platform?
It's not as if there isn't the space, nor is there a signal in the way.
The cost couldn't be excessive.
