Just outside Manchester Picadilly and I have never seen any human life on it? Is it a legit station now? Even the foot bridges are rusty! Must be abandoned for sure!

'Legit'? 'Abandoned'? Its still open, 3-4tpd in each direction, footbridge must be in fine condition if it's still open, regardless of image. it survived a closure attempt a couple of years back, and tbh I doubt it will close, due to the complexity of closure procedures.

Well, I'll be blown! Whenever I go past it, it just looks like an abandoned waste site. I must admit, it doesn't help that it's right bang in the middle of a complicated bit of railway line. And you must admit, it is lacking in even the most basic of facilities! I nominate it for the most boring and lifeless station in the UK!

The fact that Peartree in Derby is still open proves that it is damn difficult to close stations!
Funny thing is, when TPE had their open day about 16 months ago at Ardwick, as part of Manchester Science Week, in the directions to get there it said that the nearest railway station was Ardwick. Trains run infrequently each day, apart from Sunday (when there is no service)...what day was the event on at Ardwick depot...thats right, a Sunday!
Tbh, it would have been nice if TPE could have used one of the spare 185's that day to run a shuttle into Ardwick depot :P

Do you use Ardwick? Reminds me of Manors in Newcastle aswell
Think Northern would want to close that one if they could - it is bloody hard to find the entrance.
Teeside Airport and British Steel Redcar show you how hard it is to close stations.

When I did my route learning for Darlington - Middlesbrough one of the Newcastle guards told me a couple had travelled from somewhere like Liverpool and been mistakenly sold tickets to Teesside Airport on a weekday when there was no service! He rang Control and suggested they put a Special Stop Order on but they refused and told him to chuck the people off at Darlo from where Arriva would book them a taxi to the airport.....:roll:

Manors is actually more well used than people think - handy for the business park and now Northumbria University. Northern added more of the Morpeth trains to stop there as well.
Of course it is nothing like it used to be. Shame.

According to the figures on Wikipedia in 2009/2010 Manors was used by 2,998 people. To put that in perspective, Burdale station on the Malton & Driffield Railway was surrounded by hills and the only habitation was a small farm but it sold 2,894 tickets in 1922.

Cheers, was not sure, what a place it was,The Bobs,Zoo,Circus,speedway,Dog track. Went to Belle Vue on many occasions.

Still equates to over 10 people per day, although probably oe than that as I haven't factored in the effect of no Sunday service. I'd be interested to see what the figures were before the Metro came into play.

the distinctive thing you'll notice is the total lack of people at Manors. At the time it had a 20 minute frequency of trains on the clockwise and anti-clockwise Tynemouth Loop sevice plus a train every 1.5-2 hours to Berwick but the sad fact is nobody used it.
Like many staions in the urban area it was deserted for the trams, buses and cars.

The next station east from Ardwick used to be "Ashburys for Belle Vue" but it was a long walk.
More like "Belle Vue Parkway"
Parkway (noun) Definition: suffix - a long way away from, not really anywhere near. See "Easyjet"

The irony with Ardwick is that a lot of TPE services from the Standedge route are held at a red signal in the platform waiting for a path into Piccadilly

When the 185s were first introduced, the gps-assisted-I-assume auto-announcer used to annouce "We will shortly be arriving at Manchester Piccadilly" just as you ground to a halt at Ardwick.
Anyone who made for the doors sometimes had a long wait, plus on a Liverpool-bound service they got to find out how "bouncy" 185s are whilst traversing the ladder crossing over into Platform 14...

Ashburys was the Station I had in mind for Belle Vue,some how I put Ardwick
must have been thinking of the Apollo.

Twas a school trip, so the zoo was our primary destination. Belle Vue station was right outside.

Yes Ardwick does seem like a particularly desolate station - it just a shame more couldn't be made of stations like this such as promotion and more frequent service - but I suppose if the demand just isn't there...

I suspect that, like Fairfield, it's too close to Ashton Old Road and really can't compete with the frequent bus service

Thanks for the link Wyvern, it was indeed a massive park of 165 acres,I recall attending the 100th birthday of the firm I worked for when I left school,One of the restaurants was massive run by Fortes, the firm had booked this restaurant for two nights, I recall over 2500 of us sitting down with a family member on the Saturday for one dinner sitting,it went like clockwork, most big firms in Manchester used Belle Vue for parties, as they could cater for up to 3000 in one sitting.

Well, it is right next to the ring road aswell, so it could be used for a P+R, but it is too close to the new areas of the city to have any effect, and is pointless as an interchange as this could be done at Guide Bridge or Piccadilly, still, is a nice place to spot from occationally...

And the fact that, like Fairfield, there are no signs of any kind directing people from Ashton Old Road to the station, so those that have never used the stations would never know they even existed! Heck, I've driven up and down Ashton Old Road thousands of times and I don't know how or where to get into either of them!
