That's got massively overcrowded written over it, especially when you give passengers the option of a magical replacement bus to connect with a train or a diverted direct train they will aim for the train.
Similar happened this weekend (Sunday) at Birmingham with only an hourly Pendo towards Birmingham International & Coventry with replacement buses for LNR (calling at every lamppost to the airport), strange enough passengers caused overcrowding on the hourly Pendo which was diverted via Perry Barr.

Not to mention there was disruption on Saturday, which meant there was a 3+ hour gap in Birmingham to London Avanti trains in the evening (18:47 then 22:03).
The Scotland-London trains in that time period were sent via Trent Valley due to late running, skipping Birmingham entirely.
I don't think there was any engineering work Saturday though (just Sunday), so LNR services still ran.
Slow lines through the work are being 'released' at certain times to allow a limited number of freight services through
Avanti are planning to run 1tp2h via Chat Moss to Manchester Piccadilly (13/14)
Otherwise things are terminating at Stockport (from South / Hope Valley), some things at Manchester Oxford Road/Manchester Piccadilly (from North / Liverpool) and Manchester Victoria (from Huddersfield), with a few other services terminating significantly earlier
I assume the reason the dates haven't been included in the Network Rail media centre is because if they put them out they will be immediately hounded with questions as to what trains will run. Something which they very much have been unable to answer while the process for establishing what can be offered via all the different diversionary routes is still ongoing. If a diverted service is available or not is also at risk of being somewhat contentious.
Yes I agree that there is no point in going public until all the details are sorted out. I just thought that for such a major blockade, things would have been sorted out by now.
At least this way Stockport is there to run buses from - that would probably be difficult to do from a small station down the line and would it even be possible to turn trains around?

Yes, closing Stockport, Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport at the same time is clearly not a good idea. Everything would be turning around at Wilmslow and Macclesfield with a bus requirement I doubt you could fulfill.

Unfortunately not. It's regularly up until T-16 as @The Planner often says before there's a clear steer. Things hypothetically are nailed in by T-12 (being sixteen weeks prior and twelve weeks prior to the week in question).

I think it would be undeliverable unfortunately. The TfW is in the way so that'd have to be cut back to Warrington Bank Quay, and then the amount of time it'd take up getting in and out of platform 13 would be scary long, so it'd end up being only them at Piccadilly in the hours they went in. It's also a nightmare to provide for London - Glasgow around it, so they would probably not have done 1tph London - Manchester.

It depends if there's a diverted service I guess. The ideal diversion would have been CrossCountry, as they have some appropriate traction to go that way and offer a bit of capacity. However I don't think there's any chance of their train crew learning more routes while they're in a dispute...

Not really - the Stockport - Stalybridge survived as a shuttle for passengers changing between London and Trans-Pennine trains when the latter went via Victoria to avoid passengers having to traipse across Manchester. Assuming Avanti run services terminating at Stockport that situation will arise again.

It's likely that will happen without the diversion too. It will probably be quicker to change trains at Warrington Bank Quay and use the Transport for Wales to and from Manchester Oxford Road than it will be to go to Stockport and change to the bus.
I understand that Northern utilise the Stockport - Man Vic route to move rolling stock so I’m hoping a number of their staff could operate the route of the option was being considered but I’m not sure that this closure would release enough DMUs for Northern to provide a service and maintain the altered services on other routes.
They - or their precursor - ran Victoria to Buxton services via Denton but probably 20 years ago, and have shown no inclination to do so again since. I remember using the service then, so it was probably when I lived in Manchester before 2008.

I also once used the exact same service on a Sunday journey to London Euston, changing at Stockport where the VT service began. Saved having to bump along on a RRB from Piccadilly.

In the past freightliner trains to and from Trafford Park have been diverted via a reversal at Edge Hill and then via Warrington Central to reach Trafford Park from the west. The west facing connection at Trafford Park has now gone so there would need to be a further reversal to get into and out of Trafford Park itself. Perhaps if this diversion is being used trains would be top and tailed (a loco at each end) between Edge Hill and Trafford Park?
I doubt it. Finding suitable paths crossing the neck at Edge Hill would also be a problem as there isn’t much leeway getting a train of that length across and requires about six minutes so i’m told.
The CLC route isn’t cleared for W10 gauge. When these diverts occurred in the past the container traffic was most likely standard containers before 9ft high cubes were prolific. Or if they were they were hauled on low deck wagons.

There are no conductors who sign that unfortunately and only a tiny number who sign towards Stalybridge. I don't think there's any possibility of that happening.
The possession looks to be giving some interesting workings, Northern Guide Bridge to Hadfield services and Guide Bridge to Sheffield services too. That'll make for a different week in work, taxis galore for train crew!
If Northern are using Guide Bridge as a terminus, will TPE have to reverse services at Stalybridge and have RRBs messing up the place running into Manchester again?
