A fourth series of Tim Dunn's popular TV series, The Architecture The Railways Built, will be shown in 2023 after UKTV commissioned another series.

"A fourth series of Tim Dunn’s popular TV series, The Architecture The Railways Built, will be shown in 2023 after UKTV commissioned another series.

Produced by Bob Brown and presented by Tim Dunn, the series shows off the incredible design behind some of the biggest and smallest stations in Britain.

Stations include the Victorian Lincoln Central to the 21st-century construction of London Bridge as well as railway structures in Knaresborough, Halifax and Scarborough.

The third series of The Architecture The Railways Built launched with a consolidated 329,000 viewers and went on to average 284,000 viewers across its 10 episodes, meanin gthe series averaged 400,000 viewers.

Filming for the next series is underway and will be shown on Yesterday in Q1 2023 with another 10 episodes, other episodes are available to watch now on UKTV Play.

I saw Tim Dunn and crew filming in Borough Market last Wednesday. They were underneath the "new" railway viaduct that crosses the roof of the market and leads to London Bridge station.

I'm glad to hear that Season 4 is being produced as its probably been one of the best railway related programmes on TV for a while. I think the only main criticism I can give for UK TV media programmes for the channel 'Yesterday' is that they are missing the trick on selling on old series to streaming platforms such as Netflix.

I quite like watching Channel yesterday, and its great that the show has brought a good amount of viewers in. However, there is a lot of people who wont watch their programmes as they might not have an interest in watching much mainstream TV due to ads and the convenience that streaming brings.

its not just Tim Dunn's shows that could benefit from this, other ones like Abandoned engineering, Rob Bell's the buildings that fought Hitler,Smoke & steel, and for car enthusiasts Bangers and cash along with many others to be considered. By all means they should definitely premier the new episodes on 'Yesterday' and I don't want the channel gone as i enjoy watching it, but if it went to streaming more people can enjoy the shows at their own leisure, and bring it to an audience that might not have sat down to watch these on its original channel.

But back to the main topic i look forward to more Architecture the railways built for next year!

Just because they license Netflix to broadcast the show doesn't mean they won't ever repeat it on their own channel; that'd be a massive waste of airtime.

As far as I know the series is available free on UKTV Play.

I have just checked and at the time of writing all episodes from the first three series are available to watch.

UKTV Play is not a paid for streaming service as far as I know. I access it via an Amazon Fire Stick as I happen to have an Amazon prime account mainly as it saves money on deliveries. But as far as I know any TVWiFi dongle should get you access to UKTV play?

It is not a paid for service (UKTV is a subsidiary of the BBC) and can be freely accessed on TVs or mobile devices using the UKTV Play app or on the UKTV Play website. All you need to watch the programmes is an account which you can create for free.

Thanks for confirming that. All the episodes of the Architecture the Railways Built I have watched via the UKTVplayer.
Hardly ever watch live TV these days, as I would generally be busy doing things and forget when programmes on are. Prefer to binge watch when I have time!

All episodes are on the free to watch/stream UKTV Play website and app. Sometimes stuff from BBC channels makes its way to Netflix, but if you look at the numbers in the press release you’ll see it’s very popular on UKTV Play. Some of the TOCs have picked it up on their streaming platforms too I noticed - not so long ago I was able to stream our episode on Surbiton on the SWR train-based entertainment system as we zipped thru the station itself, which pleased me.

Yeah they are available for free on UKTV play, however there is ads.

It is particularly difficult for an often-irritating loudmouth like me, but the wait between filming and screening these is a real trial. I can't tell anyone where we've been or what we've seen, or indeed what my take on it might be. It is agony having 1000 pics on my phone and not being able to show them to anyone.

The ever-superb Ian of Ianvisits has put together that handy listing of the first set of eps as has been noted- then there are a few more to go live too. I still can't quite believe that we've done 40 episodes now; when I first had the idea I reckoned we might get a three-parter. I'll be honest, a lot of my favourites are the ones which we meet the people who look after, maintain, or design buildings that we feature. Each and every one loves their building to bits - they are railway enthusiasts even if they don't know it - and it's a privilege to be allowed to go and see these places. What is so pleasing is that by highlighting some of these places, funding and people get diverted to them as well.

BTW the first ep features the forth rail bridge BUT I don't think they include the bit where, at the top of the structure as the wind started to rise quickly, i actually had to crawl along the walkway because i was too terrified to stand. Each ep also features time in the NRM (full disclosure: i work for them occasionally and am on its advisory board) with a couple of objects related to the main story (ish); and if not the NRM we explore stuff in the Network Rail archives in York. I think we're the first tv cameras to go inside, and i'll be honest, we don't even come close to scratching the surface of what sits in that warehouse.

I do not work in distribution or licensing - and as per Netflix comments above, I don't think you'll see DVDs of any of these. UKTV has commissioned these directly. There are no ongoing fees to repeat them therefore, so putting them on UKTVplay generates a good amount of revenue via ad sales with no volume costs. Netflix Britbox audiences (really) are tiny. I would imagine that the commercial upside of keeping them on UKTVplay cf licensing them to other streaming services and taking a small fee, is significant. Also DVDs are high risk high capital expenditure for relatively low gain. DVD market is shrinking whilst streaming is growing. I don't own any DVD playing devices any more - and that;'s indicative of the trend.
