Question to those in the know... If APT had been accepted into full service all those years ago were there plans to immediately upgrade the MKIIIa OLE into something akin to today's UK1?

I think so. There were plans for a new design of MK4 OHLE to be used on the West Coast Mainline.

Ah - thanks. I'd forgotten about the proposed MK 4; I don't think I ever saw the design for it. Strangely enough I believe MK1 was suitable for APT speeds, up to a point anyway.
