Apprenticeships?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody knows which TOCs offer apprenticeship schemes? The information appears to be quite hard to find on the websites.

You might want to check with your local job centre. Mine did have a list of a few railway companies which were offering apprenticeship schemes.

LU offer a good apprenticeship scheme, of which Daniel is a fine export!

First Group - FCC, FGW, Scotrail, FTPE - Will probably be a Siemens apprenticeship...

Southern - Selhurst Depot

South West Trains - Wimbledon.

Network Rail

Depends on what area of the company you want to get an apprenticeship in really, as most TOCs do Engineering apprenticeships at their depots, whilst others do also offer apprenticeships in customer service - fgw for example!

Looking at your location, FCC or East Anglia or Network Rail would probably be your best bet, though be advised! TOC apprenticeship applications are closed for this year, next ones will be around next Spring - But's its better to get in contact with a TOC anyway!

Also, Beware - Most TOC's now seem to be rather keen on taking on anyone aged between 16 to 18...Unfortunatly...

London Underground have both an engineering/maintenance and an operational (ie. service delivery) apprenticeship scheme.

Transport for London have a highways technician scheme.

There is also an Information Management scheme, I am not sure if this is with TfL or LU (I think TfL but stand to be corrected).

From what I've read working what seems like the worst job in the industry can get your foot onto the ladder, so make sure you consider any apprenticeships that come available in your area even if it's not exactly the job you want to end up in.

The IM one would probably be with TfL. It's only really Operations, Network Services and the Asset Performance Directorate (Metronet) left under LU!

And now LU shares its MD and COO with London Rail (DLR/Trams/LO)!!!

I would advise an engineer/technical role if you can do it. The LU ops one may give you a decent salary, but it's semi skilled and little future in some of the jobs. What spend two years as an apprentice to end up as a CSA!

LU IM still exists though, sitting under Finance and Support Offices. I know someone who works for IM in LU.

Whilst many individuals in Capital Programmes, Safety, Strategy, Finance and so on were transferred to TfL under Tupe the other month, these directorates still sit within the LU organisation chart.
