Hi, having recently applied for the role as trainee train driver at Darlington, I have received an email stating they are no longer progressing with the role. Does this mean I am unsuccessful or that they have took the job completely down. I received an email 2 weeks ago saying that due to high volumes of applicants we are taking longer and will be in touch soon. I also have a feeling this maybe due to arriva losing the contract as to why they have taken the role off? Gutted anyway had a feeling I done well on application.

Yeah seems strange to me if I was unsuccessful then it should be "unsuccessful". I looked on on my duetschebahn group profile and it says end of process. Just seems strange arriva sent the email and not them which is who sent the the first one regarding the process been slow.

I see that Northern have put a notice on their careers page. Due to the take over this Sunday (1st March) when their association with Arriva comes to an end, they will no longer be recruiting on the Deutsche Bahn site.

You cannot actually access the Northern careers page anymore, but you can still access the DB site for careers with Cross Country & Grand Central. When you log on that way, there are still Northern jobs advertised if you do a full search of Arriva TOC roles.

The update from Northern is not 100% clear. I get the impression anyone who has recently applied for anything (going through the paper sift) is snookered - it's game over and you will have to applying for the same job when it is re-advertised once Northern are back up and running with the operator of last resort at the whelm.

It doesn't make it clear what will happen to people who have actually been through assessments, medicals, interviews, talent pools, etc and are more advanced through the recruitment cycle (i.e. If they applied months ago for the role!). The notice seems to imply HR staff will make contact with people in due course.

It must be very frustrating for anyone caught up in this and potentially suffering a knock back. I don't recall there being any issues with the Virgin/Avanti change over in December and people being advised to reapply for jobs.

I got the same email for the same role in Darlington too. I'm hoping it's down to Arriva's franchise ending soon as people who have applied to other Northern depots have had the same email. I'm guessing the government operator that's taking over will have a different recruitment process and website so hopefully they'll re-advertise.

I have an interview on Thursday for a conductor role. I will be asking what will happen with my application come 1st March.

I'll post my findings in here.

I'd be very surprised if applications etc currently in progress are lost. It's only a transition from one operator and owning group to a completely different operator, everything internally will be business as usual so there will only have to be a separation of the external side of things.

From reading northern railways page, you need to re apply from 2nd March onwards.
Maybe they are re assessing the vacancies or introducing a new recruitment structure.. who knows

I got the email of doom too, I'm also hoping that we can just re-apply shortly too, I also felt pretty confident with my application. Looking on the bright side though, if they do post the job again on the new platform they're going to use it gives us the chance to beef up the application and maybe fine tune it even more. All the best everyone!

Hi mark did you chase them up about this at the time? I know someone who got a job with northern at the back end of 2018 /start of 2019 and everything was left scarily last minute like contracts etc and he had to do some chasing for it.

Yep, northerns HR can be abit slap dash at times. Adding a operator change into the mix was never going to be easy.

Has anyone who had the ‘nolonger progressing with the role’ emails from northern had any update since the franchise change?

Theres not going to be an update unfortunately!
If they decide to recruit again you'll have to reapply when you see the job posted.

Northern have quite a few vacancies on their new careers site which is surprising in the current climate as most other HRs are freezing recruitment until further notice.

Yeah I’ve noticed northern are still listing new vacancies, I just wondered if anyone knew if the intention was to re-advertise those driver roles that were stopped before the franchise change, or have they been scrapped all together? They were advertising for various depots at the time, Sheffield, Darlington etc seems from reading this thread all were stopped

I applied to workington which closed mid feb. Got the email about data transfer to ntl early march.

I think for Darlington unfortunately for whatever reason they stopped it. A friend got the same email for Darlington, I read few week back few people got the job for newcastle depot and the people who didnt also got the no longer processing email.

I applied for York and still have not had the email - not progressing with this role so I hope my application is still being assessed

Has anybody else applied for York and heard anything yet?

Count yourself lucky. Greater Anglia just ignore applicants they no longer wish to progress with, and hope that they get the hint.
