Appleby - Carlisle - Leicester

Hi all,

There is a helpful easement which allows those of us travelling from Appleby to the south to go north first, via Carlisle. Once there, you can use Virgin/WCML which can save time and is often more comfortable. So far so good.

Now, Carlisle to Leicester is allowed via Birmingham. But if you want to buy an off peak return from Appleby to Leicester (still via Carlisle), NRE and EastCoast wont let you go via Birmingham and route you through Manchester and Sheffield instead. But you can buy a (more expensive) off peak return from Carlisle to Leicester via Birmingham........

Can someone explain this?

• £265 First Class Anytime Return via Peterborough
• £219 First Class Anytime Return via Sheffield
• £191.30 Standard Anytime Return via Sheffield
• £148 Standard Anytime Return via Peterborough
• £92.50 Standard Off-Peak Return via Peterborough (Mon-Fri not before 0930)
• £65.70 Standard Off-Peak Return via Sheffield (Mon-Fri not before 0430)

There is no fare by "Any Permitted Route". Given this, it's no surprise that the booking engines struggle to cope with travel by a Permitted Route which passes through neither Peterborough nor Sheffield.

Given that if time isnt an object you can, if clever and using multiple splits go via Leeeds and then on via Notingham or Sheffield I am unsure why youd wish to use the WCML and then if doing so why you wouldnt change at Crewe and Nuneaton? Coming from Scotland I would in years past go Edinburgh>Carlisle>Leeds on iether a Northern or VT and Connections advance and then on Via Northern and EMT or XC and EMT with the only walkup ticket being Leeds>Notingham if needed. It wasnt quick but it was, untill Megabus dnubbled services Edinburgh>Sheffield, Very cheep.↲

In NFM32 (1986, which I have a copy of), there were only "Any Permitted" fares between Appleby and Leicester - although it wasn't called that in those days; they were simply unrouted.

My hypothesis is that the routed fares were added after British Rail's sectorisation to help resolve revenue disputes between the Region and InterCity sectors.
