Anytime Standard to Off-Peak First (zero fare excess issues)

VT are not allowed to make up their own rules that less favourable to the passenger.

Currently on a London bound VT service. The TM has just announced that holders off off-peak tickets will need to purchase a new full priced ticket.

The guidance notes that this should be an excess which is the difference between the fare paid and the appropriate fare.

It goes on to say how there is no penalty even if there was an opportunity to buy before boarding train.

The difference between the correct process and the TMs suggestion would be at least £ 80!

Depending on the service involved there's a good chance that many Off Peak tickets would be valid anyway.

If it's supposed to be a money-saving gesture then at least they could formulate it as less of a passive-aggressive threat and more of a 'if your ticket isn't valid because of time restrictions, you can excess it to an Anytime without a fee'.

They weren't saying excess to Anytime they were saying a new Anytime ticket must be purchased. Do you think you would get to keep the Off-Peak ticket snd submit refund request?

I was thinking they meant that they would retain/confiscate the off-peak ticket.

In any event surely VT are flouting the process by refusing to issue excess tickets- can't be time issue as TM still has to go through rigmarol of selling new ticket and taking payment etc

You aren't entitled to an excess *on board* to upgrade to 1st, you must do it before you board. This is because too many people were getting away with paying when challenged.

Quick update on this.... asked for an excess on a Standard Anytime singoe London Euston to Preston ticket to First Off-Peak single....

Won't mention station....

Was asked...would you like to reserve a seat on a particular train?

Ok no charge just keep the tickets together
