Anytime single date cutoff time

I'm arriving at Luton Airport on Friday and want to catch the train to Borehamwood. The flight is scheduled to arrive at 23:00. I won't have any checked luggage and hopefully would get to the shuttle bus fairly quickly.

National Rail Enquiries gives the following possibilities: 23:20, 23:50, 00:45

I wanted to buy a ticket in advance to speed things up, but wondered if an anytime single with Friday's date on it would still be valid for the 00:45 if the plane is delayed? Is the cutoff time midnight or some time in the middle of the night?

If it is an Anytime Day Single, then the cut off is 04:29 the day after the date on the ticket (ie a ticket dated 03/11/17 is valid until 04:29 on 04/11/19).

So, to clarify, you can use that 00:45 train.

That is correct. An Anytime Single dated 3/11 expires at 0430 on 5/11.

Agreed. If the plane lands at 2300 you’ll be doing extremely well to be at Luton Airport Parkway station bearing in mind you’ll have to exit the plane, walk through the maze or corridors, navigate passport control and catch the shuttle bus from the airport to the station.

An Anytime Single is valid until 0429 on day 3.

An Anytime Day Single is valid until 0429 on day 2.

For completeness Anytime Day Singles are issued between Luton Airport and Elstree & Borehamwood, not Anytime Singles.

If that's the case then the Anytime Terms and Conditions are quite misleading or at least vague. They state

Anytime Single must be used within 2 days of the date shown on the ticket and up until 04:29 after the last day of validity.

If the ticket is dated 3rd November, I'd understand the 5th November to be 'within two days' (Sunday is within two days of Friday, to put it differently). There is then extra validity up till 04:29 the next day ie until 04:29 6th November.

If it is that the two days includes the date on the ticket itself, they really need to be clearer. A clearer way of putting it would be

Anytime Single is valid for 48 hours from the start of the date shown on the ticket and up until 04:29 after the last day of validity.

On further thought and Googling: it seems that 'within 2 days' in an inherently rather vague phrase, and it's meaning - particularly whether or not you include the current day as day 1 or day 0 - is quite contextual, and probably not therefore suitable for a legally binding contract...

You're right, if you tell me today I've got 7 days to finish my presentation, I know I must finish it not later than Thursday evening.
If you tell me I've got one day to find last month's overdue rent, I know that doesn't mean by midnight tonight, but by tomorrow evening.

I beileve that that rule might have been abolished, now that tickets are valid until 0429 the day after the printed expiry date.
