Anytime return - break on return

Hi all,

I'm currently planning my ticket purchases for the near future and wondered if you could advise me.

I will be travelling as follows:

Day 1:
STA (Stafford) to KID (Kidderminster)

Day 2:
KID to SBJ (Stourbridge Junction)
SBJ to BMO (Birmingham Moor Street)
BMO to SBJ

Day 3:
SBJ to STA

My plan is currently to purchase the following:

• STA to KID anytime return for covering day 1 STA to KID, day 2 KID to SBJ and day 3 SBJ to STA
• SBJ to BMO Off peak return for covering day 2 SBJ to BMO & return

I'm unsure as to whether or not I am permitted to utilise the return portion of the anytime return over day 2 and 3 as described. Could somebody please advise me if this is permitted?

Provided the ticket validity is one month there is no problem with validity.

This is probably the case, but it will depend on where STA and KID are, which you haven't informed us.

There's nothing contentious there at all. Absolutely permitted on an Anytime Return (SOR).

Can you not use station codes without accompanying them with the full station names? It's a pain in the arse to decipher.

Otherwise, yes, that should be fine.

Most Tickets allow you to break your journey. This means that you do not have to make the whole of your journey at the same time or, where allowed, on the same day.

Where a break of journey is allowed, there is no limit to the number of times that you can do so within a Ticket’s period of validity, until the journey is completed.

I got that from a Northern guard last week. My reply was, "Oh dear - did you miss the brief sent out in late September about the new National Rail Conditions of Travel and how they clarify break of journey?" (I was on a TADA so he knew I was an "insider").

It stumped him for a moment, so I offered to show him the said conditions. He was willing to look (which was refreshing) and told me "no one had told him" and that he would "talk to his colleagues about it". So maybe the attitude is changing, but we'll wait and see.

Please use the stations' full names the first time you refer to them. Not everyone will be familiar with the codes for your local stations.

Northern's briefing was actually just passing round the ATOC brief, which basically said "nothing has really changed", so the frontline staff not knowing isn't much of a surprise to me, but as you note, nice to see the Guard taking notice of what you said.

I'm sure it's about the attitude test. I'm always really careful to present things as trying to be helpful to guards, rather than argumentative. It helps that I've already explained what a TADA* ticket is (you'd be amazed how many people have never seen one before) and what I do in the industry.

* For those who don't know, TADA is Travel Agent Discount Authority - 75% off most fares, but you only get a certain number every year.

Thanks for the replies and help. Sorry about the station codes - being my local stations it failed to occur to me, them being my locals, that others wouldn't be as familiar. I've added the names now . Thanks again!

Being a Southerner I got Staines to Kidbrooke via South Bermondsey and Bournemouth....

You may have possible problems with staff determining that your ticket once used on day 2 expires on day 2, but this is neither likely nor correct.
