I've just accepted a position at Northern Rail subject to a medical and references. Anyone give me a heads up on the medical? Also what are the holidays and other benefits like? I've not seen the contract yet and I know some of the benefits are free rail travel and the salary but that's it for now.

Cheers

Big congrats, I'm waiting in a pool for trainee driver. If you don't mind me asking what role and depot have you got ?

Did you get the call today ?

Congrats :) what is the position for? speaking for drivers and guards on east side we get 5 weeks annual leave a year plus 6 floating days to use whenever we want but the general consensus is that its not easy once your passed out and in the links to get your floating days when you want them. With the annual leave, you get it allocated - 3 seperate weeks and 2 together, spread throughout the year. Theres rounds of swaps where you have opportunity to put in to swap your weeks if you want to change them. Again your not guaranteed to get them but can try. We get free travel on any northern service and nearly all grand centrals. Theres also schemes run by external companies in conjunction with northern such as a recent bike purchasing scheme where you pay monthly tax free. Pretty awesome place to work. Medical is eyesight, drugs alcohol, hearing, balancing(various weired and wonderful methods they used to test that), blood sugar, blood pressure and a questionaire. They've recently changed to a different company for the medicals so yours might differ to when i started earlier this year.

Thanks for the congrats.

It's as the contract manager for northern's alternative transport, so it's not as exciting as driving a train or working on one but I'm thrilled to be working for northern. I will be based at their HQ in York and I've now got a feeling that my holiday entitlement maybe different to front line roles?

So northern is a good company to work for then? This is my first job working for the rail industry, as I've been a civil servant for the past 8 years.

I'm surprised I was offered it, as they'd interviewed internally at the same time.

I received the call yesterday and my interview was last Friday.

Well done getting into the pool, as I know it's massively hard to get into the train driver side.

Wow interviews last Friday, that's quick. Well done, coming up against some internals you must of done well. I'm hoping I get a call soon, same as a few others. Over 6 months for me now. Good luck in your new role, keep us posted how your getting on.

I only had to wait a week and that was long enough, so 6 months must be hard.

I've still got my medical and references to do and then I can hand my notice in. I looked at trainee train driver, as I'm a qualified HGV driving instructor and taught the Millitary for the 6 years and then moved into an office role, hence going for the job I've just got.

Once I've started and have my feet under the table, I'll make some quiet Enquiries if you're still waiting to start and that goes for all the others waiting to start at Northern and our paths my cross one day, when I'm planning for blockades on the tracks.

Good luck and hope you start soon

Thanks, and again good luck. 6 months is long, some people have been waiting longer. This forums been a great help and you never know, like you say hopefully our paths may cross.
