Quite possible that I'd spoke to a chester bloke - he was looking quite down having sat at Gobowen for 3 hours then having to slum it to New Street with a broken unit and then have it finally give up the ghost with door faults!
Learned a valuable lesson he did though - never ask New Street platform goons for assistance, they're still just learning how to walk, let alone think!
For some reason most Chester traincrew love to moan at everything, they moan at working for Arriva trains wales as they prefered it when they were first north western. But then they moaned at how crap first north western was when they worked for them. They just love to moan, they dont like us salop drivers because we took some diagrams off them, although these were the diagrams like the last new street that they moaned about doing as they are not good diagrams..................Go figure! When I'm PNB in chester I avoid the mess room at all costs, its either really miserable in there or very militant. There are a few chester guys who are really good though & I enjoy working with them, but it seems they are a minority.
Oh & although I'm not blind & think that ATW is the best thing ever,as in the end it has the same problem as all TOC's i.e.Profit is the main thing.
But I do think that ATW do get a rough write up when you know what really happens.
:For instance we have had loads of 175 failures lately, but 175's are not maintained by ATW,they are all done by Alstom at chester as part of the lease agrement. They are a crap unit & just like voyagers are already buggered. Many units are out in service with engines isolated & other non safety equipment isolated.None of which is ATW's fault but we get the blame.
:As for the Aberystwth-birmingham service,a real source of complaints to ATW.Well here's a little list for you to see what is really going on.
-Delays between Aber/Pwl to salop. Some down to 158's overheating at Tallerdigg but down at least %70 since last year,so that is ATW's fault as such. But most delays are down to failure of the RETB system at Mach.It sometimes takes up to 15 minutes to get an electronic token after the driver has moved the RETB cab unit into multiple cabs to try & get the token.Dodgy RETB base stations being the problem so the delay there is down to Network rail. Off course then this causes a problem with the single line which should never of been singled so once again delay down to Network rail.
-Salop to Wolves.**** poor regulating from salop at times with the central local being put infront of the ATW service as close as a minute apart..Delay Network rail.
-Delays at oxley due to extremly crap regulating by a certain signaller, approach oxley on a caution aspect at the distant, come to stand at his first signal at red only to watch the bloody thing flash straight through from single yellow, double yellow, green in a matter of a split second. Once again down to Network Rail.
-Wolves to brum. If we are right time we then catch up with the local emu at tipton & follow the damn thing all the way in.If we are late then we actually get a better run in as long as we are only up to 10 late. Delay Network Rail/planning.
-Brum to wolves on the return is amazing at times.I've had it loads of times where we have been all set to depart on time & a minute before departure an empty pendo is put out infront of me,ok I thought maybe he can get out of my way.Which actually they dont as a good 158 will outrun a pendo between brum & wolves with the multiple speed changes & max linespeed of 75mph.Then after the pendo you get a central emu ECS for soho put out in your time!!! Followed by getting cautioned/stopped all the way to soho & then you catch up with the pendo around springvale/monmore green & all the way into wolves. Then of course oxley forgets you again & does his red, single yellow, double yellow, green thing with you again! Delay all down to Network rail.
Ok so long winded but I hope that somewhere in there you can see that ATW may get the blame, but do they deserve it on that?

Thanks GhostCAV. No luck with ATW, but I've just been offered and accepted an interview and selection day with VT as a first class host, which was why I initially quit NWR (among other things)
Congrats on that Nutter,I take its with west coast VT? Otherwise you will still be working for Arriva...LOL
