Any way to extend an off-peak return validity?

Hi all,

I was hoping to ask some advice regarding a situation with an off-peak return.

The situation is this. I bought an off-peak return (with the return part being valid for use within 1 month) and used the outward portion for the full journey listed on the ticket. I was originally planning to return after 28 days, but due to changes in situation I will no longer be returning before the (unused) return portion expires, but approimately 35 days after the outward instead. Is there any way to extend or change the validity, so I could use it for the later journey, or will the only option be to purchase a new ticket for the return journey?

Unfortunately the validity is already quite generous (something the railways frequently try to change) and cannot be extended further. You’ll just have to look at a new single ticket for the return. You may find there are advance singles or split ticket options that represent better value for money. I’d recommend using the forum’s ticket site to have a look.

Condition 29 of the NRCoT states:

29. Refunds on Tickets Which You Have Chosen Not to Use or Have Been Part-used.
29.1 If you purchase any Ticket(s) and then choose not to travel, you may apply for a refund from the original retailer, unless the terms and conditions of your Ticket(s) state otherwise. You must do this no more than 28 days after the expiry of the Ticket(s)

29.2 In such cases, a deduction from your refund in the case of part-used Tickets will normally be calculated on the cost of the journey(s) actually made. An administration charge may also be made, which will not exceed £5 per Ticket (£10 per Ticket in the
case of Season Tickets, as set out in Part G); however, if the administrative charge and/or other deductions exceed the refund amount no refund will be payable. If a delay or cancellation on any leg of your journey is the reason you could not complete
your journey, you are entitled to a full refund on any Tickets held for that journey under Condition 30.1.
29.3 Your refund application will be processed as soon as reasonably practicable, and the refund paid within one month of receipt of your application.

Unless there's something in the T&Cs for the ticket in question that says otherwise, I would expect the cost of the journey actually made would be considered to be the cost of the off-peak single, and the refund due would be the difference between the cost off the off-peak single and the fare paid, less a £5 admin fee.

To be blunt, no.

Yes. And, possibly, depending on the difference in fares between the Off Peak Single and Return, refund the unused portion of the first ticket.

Thank you! I've just contacted the retailer, the refund value will be about £17 so worth doing, and am awaiting their reply.

I had not considered a partial refund, so thank you for pointing out the option.

It's an option that will soon be disappearing, so don't think of it as something to do in future.
