HELP! After passing my private train drivers asessment wuth DBSCHENKER in feb 2010 i still cant find any companies recruiting drivers. I have sent my details and speculative letters to most TOC's without success. Any advice on anything else i can try short of kidnapping bosses kids and holding them to ransom until i'm offered employment!? lol
Any advice gratefully received.

Welcome to the forums!

Are you checking their respective websites regularly? Most applications are done online now also.

Unfortunately you've picked (probably) the worst time for the last 10 years!

There's a surplus of qualified, experienced freight drivers with class 1 training, traction and route knowledge all eager to jump at any vacancy within 100 miles because of recent redundancies in DBS.

Ayr depot recently closed with the loss of 28 drivers.

Thornaby has been decimated over the last 3 years with half of the remaining drivers having to do shunting duties, train preparing and TOPS/TCMS inputting.

Tyne Yard has just received a right-royal kick in the bollocks too - half the drivers have been 'released' with some of them with over 23 years in the grade.

Next stop?

Immingham and Knottingley.

Sorry if this sounds bitter but there are a lot of 40-somethings out there with mortgages and kids with the rug pulled from under them.

Having said all that, best of luck with your search and as already posted keep checking the TOC's own websites.

(Hint: Northern Rail especially in the next couple of months...)

Thanks for the advice. Keep checking websites with no luck so far. Guess its just the wrong time to be looking. Oh well here's hoping

It's not just DBS that have been cutting back. Eurostar shed a few drivers last year, and Fastline went bust too.

Some companies are definitely short - FCC for one. However, the grapevine suggests that they may have as many in training as they can support at the present time. I'm certainly aware of people passing all aspects of their selection process, only to be put "on ice" until a vacancy arises.

As ever, the vacs are likely to be at the commuter operators, so get your CV on file with them, and send it in every 6 months until you get somewhere. Best of luck.
