Any split ticketing options WVH - EDB ?

Hi,

does anyone know any split ticketing options for the following?

Wed 5th Jan 2013 Wolverhampton - Edinburgh (leave between 0700 - 1100)
Sat 9th Jan 2013 return (leave after 1000)

For two adults and two kids with a F&F railcard.

Simple fare quote is £185 return

5th January is a Saturday and 9th is a Wednesday. Is that what you meant?

Are you happy to be tied to specific trains or do you require flexibility?

I meant outbound Wed 2nd Jan and return Sat 5th Jan.

I can't think of any obvious splits, etc, with flexible walk-on tickets.

There are some good deals to be had with Advance tickets. Currently you can get Wolverhampton (0737) - Lancaster (0908) for £29.80 and Lancaster (1114) - Edinburgh (1339) for £35.70 on the way out, Edinburgh (1813) - Lancaster (2025) for £35.70 and Lancaster (2040) - Wolverhampton (2222) for £16.10, or Lancaster (2101) - Wolverhampton (2239) for £12.80. So a total of £117.30 (or £114 if using the 2101).

On the outbound if you split again at Carlisle, you can do Lancaster - Carlisle for £11.90 and Carlisle - Edinburgh for £20.40 although that involves a long wait of over 5 hours at Carlisle.

All these fares tie you to the booked train only and are for the whole group.

The first option sounds interesting - particularly on the return. Should certainly save a few quid anyway.

Note that if you split using 'Advance' (train-specific) tickets, you should allow at least the official minimum connection time between the first train arriving and the second train departing at the split point station.

The minimum connection time for each station is given on National Rail Enquiries (eg for Lancaster it's 6 minutes, so the suggestions by bb21 are fine).
