Any route London terminals

Bought my first ever season ticket for a new job in London. Costs are covered so I wanted one that could take me either from maidenhead to paddington or ascot to waterloo.
This forum recommended an any route from reading as a solution. Bought this on Friday from ascot station but when I went to use it this morning at maidenhead it didn't work. Had a debate with the guy who then let me through but can't be doing that at 06:30 every morning! The ticket then let me back through at Paddington this afternoon.

The ticket does say ascot on it which probably confused the guy but it should have worked on the machine given its in between reading and London?

Have I missed anything obvious?

Between where & where?
Where does it say 'Ascot' on it? (Just 'Issued at' ?)
Route ANY PERMITTED?

It doesn't need to say Ascot on it. A season from Reading to London Terminals is valid via Ascot.

Well, the recommendation was to buy a Reading to Zones 1-6 season, and you would probably have less hassle with that. If you are using a monthly (or longer) the price is the same and if you are using a 7-day season the price is, rather surprisingly, a touch cheaper from Reading. Not that the ticket you are using isn't valid but you are likely to experience a little more difficulty with it.

I am also confused as to why your ticket would say Ascot if you bought a Reading to London Terminals / London Zones 1-6 season ticket.

I hope you did not buy a Reading - Ascot ticket.

My best guess is OP asked at Ascot for a ticket to go from Reading to London, and was sold a ticket from Ascot to London route ANY PERMITTED, which is valid via Reading and is the same price, as Haywain said above. Might there be some advantage in revenue allocation for the ticket office to sell this - would SWT (the operator of the Ascot ticket office) get more of the revenue than for a ticket with an origin of Reading? I don't know.

There is no difference in commission but there may be an ORCATS difference, although it would be astonishing if the clerk knew both that and the Ascot ticket being valid via Reading.
