Typical day for an EC guard.
*Book on ensuring fitness for duty, ensure you have all equipment and notices
*Collect revenue equipment and ensure its functioning, arrive at platform in good time
*Main responsibility is safety of your passengers, yourself and other staff. Treat that as your top priority in "everything we do" (Hint)
*Train despatch in a safe and punctual manner
*Managing safety on board, remember you are the lead responsibilty for passenger safety on train (E.g in the coaches). Driver is lead for everything else generally. Look at stowed luggage, is it safe? Doorways kept clear, they are emergency escape routes. Dealing with passenger issues, drunk passengers, people harrassing other travellers etc. All of which happen regularly unfortunately.
*Revenue protection duties, also incorporated into that would be all your customer service duties including connections during late running, taxi's and alternative arrangements on late night trains. Dealing with ticket irregularities in a professional way, show empathy and understanding and take each case on merit....there are grey areas as afterall we are all human!
*Report incidents and unsafe acts before you finish duty using established reporting methods
*Go to London and back and book off ensuring the all important overtime from your late running is put through!!!
Hope that helps, its by no means an exhaustive list and you might find some of it more suited to interview rather than application stage (Another hint!).
Try to get your hands on a role description from HR, if you can match your skills to the person spec you wont really go far wrong at application stage.
Hope that helps you a bit.
