I have a 2015 Skoda Fabia whose car battery has come to the end of its life. The key fob stopped working as a result. Have a new car battery but key fob does not work and have to manually open car doors.

The key fob batteries are new.

Any suggestions on how to reprogramme the keys or is it a garage job?

If you can't do it yourself I would look for a mobile Auto Locksmith rather than take it to a garage, as I have heard that many dealers charge over the odds.

Depending on your vehicle you might be able to recode (or re sync) the fob yourself. It’s normally just a matter of inserting the key, turning on the ignition (not engine) and press unlock button…or something similar.

You will need to check your car manual or google the make and model to see what you can do.

Look in the manual. The keys often have to be re-synchronised when the battery is replaced, but the process differs by model.

If you have done this, check the new battery doesn't have a plastic film on one side, as they sometimes do.

Press any button on the remote control key
Unlock the door with the key in the lock cylinder within 1 minute of pressing the button

Thanks for your advice - unfortunately the guidance in the car manual did not work nor did various solutions suggested on-line.

First have you triple checked this as easy to be caught out?

Does the key body have an LED light which briefly flashes when a button is pressed? If so does it light?
Where did you buy the key batteries? If a discount/bargain store they could be old stock or low quality so not work in the key fob e.g. if part of a pack with various sizes.

If the rest of the car including radio works with no warnings I'm surprised that if done correctly the re-sync procedure does not work.

Worst case do you have a local independent VW group specialist who has both the full diagnostic software and hands-on experience.

Thanks for this, the light on the key fob wasn't working so I rechecked the batteries again to see if they had been put in the right way etc and rather embarrassingly realised I hadn't removed the small dangerous when swallowed sticker on them . Removed that and all is okay again.

Good to read that to you found a sticker on the battery then once removed could re-sync the keys to the car.

Clear film rather than a sticker with text on a battery is even less obvious.
