In the spirit of promises for northern infrastructure are there any bits of NPR/HS2 that are sufficiently settled and useful that they could be started now, without risking being useless if the full projects are completed?
My favourite would be HS2 from west of Garforth NE to the ECML to speed up XC/TPE and reduce congestion on the current bit.
Is NPR getting a new Leeds station or could four tracking from there to Garforth be started - that would be a massive help?
West side looks lumpy - the minimum would probably be Crewe-Manchester (but that is a big chunk including two massive stations) or Tamworth-Crewe (if a WCML to HS2 link is ‘cheaply’ possible)

The link for HS2 to the WCML at Handsacre is the wrong way around, it would have to be redesigned the other way from scratch so not a quickie. I suspect that the link from HS2 to the WCML will be the first cost efficiency anyway to the detriment of the Potteries.

I thought that was so, and as Crewe is a (relatively) early stage there wouldn’t be long enough to justify a link earlier I guess.
