Hi Guys,

I'm hoping someone can help. I'm looking to buy a ticket from Manchester to Inverkeithing on the 22nd of December. I have a priv pass. Looking on the National Rail website the anytime single fare is showing as both £104 and £54 on trains leaving around similar times, e.g. 11.11 changing at York £104 and then the 12.16 direct as £54. Can anyone advise me what the correct fare would be if I was to turn up on the day with my pass.

Thanks

cheapest way via York is:

Manchester-Berwick SOR £23.90 +
Berwick-Inverkeithing SOR £13.20
Total Priv Cost: £37.10 so much better than the £52.25 option.

The National Rail website cannot give you PRIV prices, nor can any of the online retailers issue them. You can only obtain these tickets in person at the booking office. There's no need to book in advance, and you can use your tickets anytime, and return within a month.

Odd, I always thought £27 was less than £37.10

Use the Route Preston ticket, take a Northern Rail or TransPennine Express service to Preston. Take a Virgin Super Voyager to Edinburgh, then a ScotRail service to Inverkeithing!

Is that really going to be quicker? I know the OP doesn't state how close to the airport they are but you waste a lot of time flying. The bus isn't that quick either.

As we've agreed it all depends on where your going to and coming from, but rail Manchester to Inverkeithing takes around 4 hours according to NRES.
The flight takes about an hour and the bus stop is right outside the terminal the journey to Inverkeithing was about 20 mins last wednesday

To be fair, First Class was saying that there was a cheaper way if the OP wanted to go via York.

How much will Manchester to Edinburgh cost if you book it the night before, and how much is the 757 bus fare?

But as you also know you have got a lot of time wasted at the airport about an hour to clear security at one end, if you have a bag on board you have to wait to get it off. So the time saved is now minimal and airtime is unproductive anyway. Also you are a lot more likely to be delayed by air travel then you are by rail, it is the season for fog.

In general TPE offer some very cheap fares between their station. It is best to search out their services between Manchester and Haymarket then buy a single Haymarket - Inverkiething. Won't always be the best value as XC do price the flows stated above, but sometime helps. TPE don't price for stations they don't serve.

I am hoping we will see the end of flights between Scotland and Manchester / Leeds soon. These are journeys rail should be a no brainer for, even with the present infrastructure.

Even cheaper than £27 (via Preston)
1. Buy a PRIV North West Rover 4/8day (valid after 0845 Mon-Fri, anytime Sat/Sun) for £14.25

2. Buy a PRIV Single (SDS) Lockerbie-Inverkeithing for £4.50

TOTAL PRICE £18.75

(The train you take doesn't have to stop at LOCKERBIE as one of your tickets is a "Rover")
