Anti Vandal Train

I've just been looking at the sectional appendix for Scotland and found this...

Anti-Vandal (Q) trains are permitted to run over any line in Scotland even though limitations on traffic types may be
published elsewhere for certain lines. These trains must be signalled by the Train Identification Code 5Z97 and where
train describers are not in use, must be signalled by the special bell signal 4 - 3 - 1. Anti-Vandal trains are authorised to
stop in section as required, and on other than Track Circuit Block lines must be accepted in accordance with Block
Regulation 3, regulation 3.7 (Absolute Block) or Block Regulation 3.8 (Electric Token Block) as appropriate.

Can't find much about what they are/were or do. Anyone know more?

Seriously, its a train with some BTP officers in that will occasionally go around at night to deter copper theives. It doesnt actually have a police livery, as its supposed to look like (and usually is) a normal service train

I remember the Q trains running in the area on the line between Daisy Hill and Moorside in the 1980's and they must have been well-known to the local anti-social behaviour elements, as rather rude graffiti appeared about them on the outside of brick-built farm overbridges.

I seem to remember that Greater Anglia send out a 317 with BTP out to deter the thieves, it even made it in to the local news.

Indeed, the existence of (and even the name of) Q trains was well known when I was at school in Lancashire in the early 80s. (1980's, that is! ) If I, as a naif 10-year-old too scared to even throw so much as a snowball at a passing train, knew of the existence of Q trains, it is safe to assume that those who needed to know about them did so!
