The transmission is hydraulic, not the engine!

The 175s are 100mph, as are Turbostars - and they have hydraulic transmission as well.

I’d put it more down to “the curse of Alstom”.

I only just found out about this - oh dear!

If Andy from Alstom hadn't disappeared from here, he probably would've been saying the same thing as last time - the 175s/180s were a cost cut build that they would refuse to do again, including less than ideal packaging of below-solebar components (at wrong angles or something).

It is true that the 180 is the only 125mph DHMU as opposed to DEMU though, if not really relevant for 175s. As for Turbostars also having hydraulic transmission - 168s/170s/171s yes. 172s no.

I think that's what I heard- that the engines in both 175's and 180's were mounted differently to "normal"
