This station is situated on a mainline, it used to have 4 platforms, and services departing in 4 different directions. It now has 2 platforms and services departing in 2 directions.

CORRECTION. It used to have FOUR and not SIX platforms as previously stated in the question. The rest of the information is correct though.

And it's not Kemble (that's not to say Kemble doesn't fit the question, it's not the one I'm thinking of)

A CLUE to help:

Trains could run through this station North-South, East-West and West-East, South-North, South-East and South-West. The remaining directions are South-North and North-South

Not Kings Norton, be sure to look at the post above that specifies all of the directions that the trains could pass through the station in, it's on an earlier post

a station that was a junction but now isnt, its on a line that goes north to south, that used to have a line crossing it that goes east to west and connections between them.

my latest thought would be newark, but i think it has 3 platforms now, but only on the ECML

You're certainly thinking along the correct wavelength, but it's not correct still.

I'm going to give this question an end point now, so if answer has not been found by the end of April, all shall be revelaed by me.

Another clue first, the station is on an XC route, and is south of Sheffield

Is it Ashchurch? I've no idea how many platforms it once had, but it used to have lines to both Great Malvern and Evesham.
