I see it's been announced that Kate Middleton is expecting her first child, not really surprising news. I'm sure quite a few people have been expecting an announcement from pretty much the day they got married - particularly as both her and William are now over 30.

I suspect the announcement wasn't planned to take place so soon, but with Kate having been admitted to hospital with morning sickness, there was no real other option but to go public.

From the way that Liz is hangin on and from the way he looks these days I don't think poor old Charlie is gonna be on the throne for long, especially with the heirs piling up behind him!

Monarch's grandson Prince William gets married and has a child, national celebrations.

Monarch's grandson Peter Phillips gets married and has two children, brief item on the news and then promptly forgotten.

I don't understand this country sometimes.

Kate Middleton has said that if they have a baby boy she will call him by the most traditional British name. We look forward to welcoming Prince Mohammed.

Charles is next in line for the throne, but some internet sources are saying that because of his age that William is next, but once is child is born, wouldn't the child be next in throne?

Not surprising news as I was expecting it sometime soon but still a good event

Are you reading Yahoo Answers per chance? ;)

Of course Charles is next in line.

Yet more superb quality reporting from the BBC:

'He or she will one day be head of the armed forces, supreme governor of the Church of England, head of state of the UK and, subject to approval by the Commonwealth, 15 other countries.'

'will': really? So, there's no chance of the offspring rejecting the crown, converting to a religion other than CoE, or, and this'll sound awful, being stillborn / miscarried / dying before Charles or William? Surely the operative words are 'if they becomes monarch'?

That said, congrats to them both. Long live the monarchy.

There is also the possibility, despite your final sentence, that there will be no monarchy by the time the child in question is in a position to be the head of state. ;)

It's only Catholics who are banned from the throne. He or she could become a Hindu, a Muslim, a Scientologist or a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and would still be eligible.

Well I know which status you'd like to have and I know which status I'd like to have, so we'll leave that there ;) Even though the role of the monarchy has been called into question over her reign, I think Her Majesty has done rather well to control the storm (if you like). I think William and Kate aid the argument for monarchy, you know with being young and eager and all.

Never knew that, thanks.

If anything the monarchy is stronger now than it has been for many years.

I hate to disappoint you but the demise of the monarchy is a long long way off.

Saying that, there are changes afoot (the Commonwealth Approved this recently) to allow Catholics into the Royal Family (mainly as it's been 400 years since it was a problem!)

BTW Twitter reactions..

Heir to the throne in bareback sex shocker.

How did this make headline news? Especially looking at the articles beneath it...

Article 2: Starbucks Planning tax changes
Article 3: US fears Syria Chemical Strike

Call me republican if you like but in my humble opinion that sums up what's wrong with the BBC and probably the wider news media

I haven't a clue really. Those two articles mentioned are massivly more important especially Tax avoiding companies.

I myself couldn't care less that Kate Middleton is pregant and expecting a child overal. Wouldn't be supprised if some form of 'conspiracy' theory pops up at some point.

Something else from Twitter
What was that Yes Prime Minister ep where @JimHacker asks Bernard whether he can arrange a royal pregnancy to hide bad news? #royalbaby

Prince William and his child are future monarchs; the other ones aren't

Bit of a silly comment tbh.

I'd say it's of vague national importance as the unborn child is a probable candidate for the future head of state.

Im not deneying that it isn't important. Just that i have no intrest in it at all is all.

More important things that are happening in the world at the moment then having it all published all over the place.

But that is just my personal opioin though and understand people have there's instead :)

Indeed, it deserves to be on the news. My frustration is that it's the BBC's major story above more important* stories

* Obviously important is subjective but a reasonable observer would surely agree.

This is where people have the wrong idea. The news isn't based around what's most important, it's based around what people are going to be most interested in.

The Starbucks story has been around a day or so already, and the Syria thing isn't going to be of concern for most people in the UK because it won't affect them or anyone they know.

I assume we will now be bombarded with 'progress' updates over the coming months in the news. As important it may be, I don't agree that it takes precedence over all other news articles (the BBC news at 6 had a feature 10mins long).

Let us be fair about this. Henry VIII was a Catholic when he ascended to the throne and he was given the title "Defender of the Faith" by the Pope.

Mind you, did anyone notice the re-writing of history in the TV series "Merlin" with a black Guinevere being cast ? Would the Queen have to approved of this before it was broadcast..:D

Since King Arthur and co probably didn't exist I'm not sure how its a "re-writing of history"'?

Well spotted...:D (I like the way that you covered your options by the use of the word "probably").

Was there also an American film made not so long ago where a Muslim from the forces of the Saladinic dynasty was an integral part of Robin Hood and his merry men ? Perhaps Little John was a Buddhist and Alan a'Dale a Zoroastarian..:D
