Another eye related question...

Im not sure exactly how "bad" my eyes are but my prescription is as follows…….

right -4.75 +5.75 @ axis 92
left -4.75 +5.50 @ axis 87

"The required standard is 6/9, 6/12 distant vision and N8 near vision or better if you wear glasses. If you do wear spectacles your unaided vision must not be worse than 6/12, 6/18. This standard may be varied, yet uncorrected vision must not be below 3/60 in each eye."

First will accept you if you wear contacts lenses but I'm still not entirely sure if I even meet the requirements?? Can anyone help…

My opticians are closed today otherwise I would have called them up.

I'm a conductor for first and my eyesight is bad... You'll be fine

Sorry I meant to say in the post its a trainee train driver I'm looking at but you probably knew that already, I spoke to a guy earlier (driver for Scotrail) who said his eyes were "worse" than mine but he got in ok, he wears contacts and is blind without them...

I had my medical last week with fsr and I need my glasses/contacts for everything! I was told I passed but must wear my glasses to work you will be fine.

Do they have the same eye tests for conductors as they do for drivers?

It's no biggie. The only thing drivers' (at Northern at least) need to do is carry a spare pair of specs with them.

What is missing from the figures that you supplied from your prescription is the near addition which, if applicable, determines whether or not you need to wear reading glasses.

I had my eyes tested at the back end of last year and I have a near addition of 1.0 or 1.25; I am just about able to read the words labelled N5 at a comfortable distance.

If I remember correctly, conductors can wear varifocals but drivers cannot but I think that drivers can wear bi-focals.

That is company specific. Some TOCs allow drivers to wear varifocals, others don't. The OH department will know what you are and are not allowed or if bupa then they have a list of the TOCs they work for.
