Speaking of anomalous place names is it something specific to Liverpool where we seem to refer to places as the village which really are nothing like a village any more. For example, Garston, West Derby, Gateacre. They get referred to by many people as "The Village".

Nope, that's a Bradford thing too. That and describing something as the "new road" when it is anything but. We still talk of the dual carriageway bypass round Bradford as the "new road" even though it must be 25 years old now...

Not just Liverpool - I have heard people talk about Didsbury Village (Manchester), for example. Accepted names tend to persist for a long time, even when the location is surrounded by new developments, or has changed its character.

At the edge of St. Helens, we have a "Windle Island", even though it must be about 40 years since the island (roundabout) was removed and replaced by a light-controlled crossroads. (A570 / A580 junction)
