Found this great 1 it is cheaper to buy a return from auchinleck to ayr if going to Glasgow there is only 1 fare for this journey and is cheaper than Glasgow price (Ayr price was assumingly calculated changing at Killie) however it says any permitted route and not sure how you could change at killie on a sunday. Conductor confirmed to me this is correct

Assuming that you mean buying a Auchinleck to Ayr ticket and travelling on a direct service to Glasgow Central and then travelling onwards to Ayr from there, this wouldn't be valid because it fails the fares check at Kilmarnock and isn't within three miles of the shortest route. The conductor is unlikely to be aware of this, however.

In any case, Auchinleck to Prestwick International is valid via Glasgow, and is cheaper.
