Annual Gold Card question

I'm thinking of purchasing (renewing) my Hatton-Lapworth annual gold card using trip.com; it mentions this will be issued as a "s-ticket". My question is how do I obtain the "Gold Card" using this ticket? Is it something a ticket office would do?

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is the adantage of buying this ticket through Trip.com, rather than at a station in the Gold Card area (where you would get it straight away) or through a TOC website (such as Southern) where it'll be posted to you?

Theoretically the retailer should also issue a Gold Record Card in Digital Railcard format when selling a qualifying season as an sTicket. My suspicion is that Trip.com will fail to do this, however. If that's the case, only they can resolve it. Ticket Offices, Train Company Customer Services and other third-party retailers won't touch it with a bargepole because you're not their customer.

Fair point. This will be enough to get me "diamond" membership status that may or may not help save me some money on hotels/rail fares over the next 20 months it will be valid. Can't see any incentives from purchasing elsewhere.

Thought as much. The "Gold Record Card" is not the same as a "Annual Gold Card" is it?

We had a report a couple of years ago of someone purchasing a Gold Card online and having to involve the Ombudsman to obtain the Gold Record Card.

I've always bought my Gold Card season ticket at my local ticket office.

Thanks for all for the replies. Looks like i'm paying a visit to my local station to avoid a bunch of aggravation.

I can't imagine that dealing with Trip.com on this issue would be anything other than an exercise in abject frustration!

While it's been brought up, it's also worth pointing out that no third party retailer other than Trainline are members of the ombudsman scheme.

The ticket office option isn't always a solution either. Last year, completely inexplicably, multiple staff at a major GWR station were totally unaware of the Gold Card area being different from the Network Railcard area and outright refused to insert Gold Card stock into their printer when issuing an annual season for travel in the extended area. Decade-old changes had completely passed them by and they wouldn't accept any information sources, authoritative or otherwise!

Trip.com do have have a customer service function with humans who do actually answer the phone and are usually clueful (at least about flights, hotels and trains in Asia, not used them for UK trains so far). You could try to give them a call and ask.

Back in the day, I used to get the cheapest Gold card and then mostly used it to get 1/3 off the off peak from 09:30 presenting a huge saving over the undiscounted and peak train 5 minutes earlier. The lady at the station was furious with my "cheating" to the point she insisted a Lapworth to Hatton GC "was not valid" to use purely as a flash Network railcard to reduce prices into London. Pointing out that by her logic its only of benefit between Lapworth & Hatton - for which I also had said season ticket and would thus never need to use its GC benefits, she blew her gasket and she grudgingly issued the off-peak return to London with a very loud "but its not in the spirit if the rules"....ringing in my ears after me.

I've had lots of firm but amicable disputes with current staff, where I knew I was right and the staff were both over-zealous and wrong, (and tbf twice having to eat humble pie when I was definitely wrong) but she was genuinely venomous about it as if I was personally swindling her.

When the Gold Card gave you the right to buy flat fare First Class upgrades after 10:00 and at the weekend - I recall the supplement was £3 - I had many ’conversations’ with guards who insisted there was no such product, because the apparent value of it made it an obvious scam. Lots wanted to sell me Weekend First, instead.

Many booking office clerks denied the existence of it, as well - or knew about it, but didn’t know how to issue it.

I'm aware of another member on here who many years ago was accused of fraud when buying a Hatton - Lapworth annual season with no intention of using it! Customer friendly railway through and through!!

yes that was me, accused of fraud for trying to buy one at three bridges station. Horsham station then refuse to sell me one for numerous reasons (all bs). I bought them at Marylebone after that, and refuse to use either ticket office again.

The clerks at Maryebone did often comment on what a great value ticket it was, but never had any trouble with them.

Agree, of the OTA's I have used they are by far the most competent for flights. I'm dealing with a schedule change now and they have been more helpful and timely than the airline.

Sounds like the janitor who thinks they own the company.

I had this experience on a Paddington Worcester train.

The staff at Paddington issued the wrong ticket and in the queue to get it fixed I missed my train. Then the ticket inspector on the train home didn't understand what a Gold card was.

It was a deeply frustrating experience.
