Annoying television adverts...

Have mentioned in another thread at some point but the sheer volume of EE adverts across the media spectrum irritates me to no end. Usually with boastful and questionable claims about being the number one choice among consumers in the same vein of different brands of toothpaste claiming that dentists recommend them the most. Mercifully they no longer have Kevin Bacon of Footloose fame narrating the radio and TV ads, but the background song still gets my goat...

Can't be as bad as that Slater Gordon ad for car finance claims, by far some of the worst acting I've ever seen...
And Slater Gordon's argument is lame and full of non sequiturs.

The Fage and Hyundi adverts. Adverts that have to tell you how to pronounce the products name would suggest there is something wrong with their marketing.

I wonder how many people now deliberately call Hyundi "High and Dry" as a mickey take following that advert? Quite a few, I would think... and I'm one of them... that advert actually gave me the idea!!!

Hyundai are telling us to pronounce their name differently to how they previously told us. IKEA also try to do this.

Don't have time for these stupid corporate games.

They might want to invest in advertising how to spell their name :) To my ear, even the 'correct' pronunciation in the advert varied.

I have a Hyundai and the make is spelt 'Hyundai' so whats the problem in pronouncing the 'ai' part as in paid or gait or trait?

Because Hyundai literally told us that wasn't how it was pronounced.

Why is that a 'problem' though?
Because I do have better things to do in my life than have to listen to companies saying: "Oh you know that we told you our name was this, well we haven't changed our name but can you pronounce it differently please"

Well no I can't. I wasted enough of my time learning your name in the first place to deal with your current corporate existential crisis.

Reminds me of Monty Python sketch. My name is spelt Raymond Luxury-Yacht, but pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove. Here’s a link to that sketch.

Talking of TV car adverts, Fiat are currently running a TV advert for an Italian car they wish to market in the UK. There is music (of a sort) playing in the advert that has no musical connections to Italy or to the UK. If anyone has seen this TY advert, do they know what country the music is from, please.

If you have the subtitles turned on, they usually say what the music is. I've seen one car advert recently where the subtitle said the music is called "Boombastic" but I have no idea if it's the one you are referring to because I don't really pay them any attention...

Nobody forces you to change the way you pronounces the name, - or even say it at all, so no need to get wound up about it.

I've always pronounced it as high-un-dye, with the stress on the first syllable, and ignored any adverts trying to promote something different.
Some years ago one of their models was on my shortlist for a new car, but I bought a Mini instead, no pronunciation issues there!

In NI there is a weird set up with Hyundai. They get the standard UK ads which uses the new pronunciation, Huyn-de, yet they also get the Irish ads pronouncing it as Hi-un-die. These are broadcast on regional variations of UTV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Yet the streaming platform ads are all Hi-un-die in NI.

The soaps on Virgin Media One in ROI are sponsored by Hyundai. I haven't seen the GB version of the pronunciation on any of the ROI adverts.

Well this is in the annoying TV adverts section. You could say this about all the ads!

We managed to change the way we pronounce Volkswagen and Peugeot, don't see why we can't learn to do the same with Hyundai.

Because their next ad agency / marketing honcho will probably change it back again. They have to look as though they're doing something, even if it makes no sense.

It draws attention to the company's continuing existence, a prime reason for random adverts.

They can pronounce it however they like but “It is pronounced” the way people pronounce it. A name is what other people use to call you…. As long as the people pronouncing it don’t in their turn insist that their way is the only way.

The Omaze advert with a Welsh woman screaming "You're a millionaire" half a dozen times. Hopefully as the competition ends at midnight tonight ( Monday) it will be off our screens tomorrow!

I am still wondering what Confused.com hope to achieve with the current long running series of TV adverts that show inflatable human bodies. The worst of these shows a man reading information on a screen, which has the effect of "inflation syndrome", then when another person enters the scene and says something, the man deflates and falls with some force on a table, smashing it and since I had a hospital appointment with a consultant that I have known for many years, I asked him what damage would have been caused by a ceiling height fall onto a wooden table with such force that the table is smashed.

The consultant said severe bruising would be the least of the problems encountered and the man should report urgently to his local A & E department at the nearest hospital, where an x-ray machine would reveal any trauma suffered.

I don’t get it either. I use Go Compare because their adverts said what they did even though Geo Compario singing Go Compare was annoying in its own right.

Electoral Commission ad keeps coming up on my colleague's Spotify, I swear they say "register to vote" nearly a dozen times in 30 seconds...

It's an advert for the Swedish Electric car "Polestar"
I think this particular advert with a rather strange American female voiceover is rather strange as the woman in question, obviously suffering from some ailment, claims never to have seen a car (a box shell with four wheels) before, them compounding it by wondering if the car came from the stars"...o_O

Lidl used to do it saying it is Leeeeee-dl. They gave up rather quickly.

What bothers me more about car adverts is not what is said but what is shown. How many have "not UK specification" or "UK specification may differ"? You should be marketing a product how we would buy it, not some other version because you're being cheap and not wanting to film several adverts!
