Merrymaker returns
Vintage Trains is pleased to confirm that Merrymaker is coming back! Well-priced diesel trips by rail.

The offer
Standard Class, in our (mostly) refurbished Mk2 TSOs with opening windows, armrests, tables. You know the score here.

Standard Plus. 24 seats on each train in our BFK, each fare includes a doorstop breakfast bap and tea/coffee, followed by an evening meal such as beef hotpot and another round of tea/coffee.

First Class. A proper breakfast, all washed down with tea/coffee/juice, as well as a two-course meal. In this case, we expect a good pork belly, followed by a cheesecake. It is the same Pullman coaches, with the linen and all, just at a much better price for these trips.

Buffet / Tavern
In association with our friends at Campbell Street Brewing (some of you will know them well!), we are opening a new on-board pub, The Red Pen, and our Buffet car will be left unreserved in its entirety. Some tables and chairs will be removed, so it becomes and informal lounge-style space for you to eat, catch-up, leg stretch and, of course, have a proper pint of beer or real cider. The usual buffet snacks and drinks will also be available.

Prices
These are the initial prices for our trip on June 3rd, from the West Midlands to Ravenglass and Carlisle.
Standard Class £79
Standard Plus £125
First Class £169
In addition, on future trips we also expect to offer the "front coach guarantee" with 64 seats at a slightly higher price.

Future trips
Once we have got this one licked, we will start to apply the brand to future diesel trips, so please continue to book those if they take your fancy also.

To book
Bookings should open online from Wednesday 19th at around 18:00. We expect these sorts of fares to be extremely popular, particularly for the Pullman service which will be at the front on either the outward or return journey also, and will include all the food and just at £169!

More information
Feel free to send a PM, or go for a Twitter DM, or ring the office.

We hope to see you all aboard Merrymaker soon and hope that our wide-opening windows, great trips and even better prices will be well-supported.

Might be an idea to specify traction where known (subject to usual caveats) as diesel enthusiasts can be quite picky as to what they will and won't travel behind. Of course the more general families and daytripper customers are much less fussed about that kind of thing.

The train locomotive is 37403 Isle of Mull. Released from the world-famous Vulcan Foundry in Lancashire, it had the D6607, then 37307, and subsequently 37403. A member of the /4 series, it was initially an Eastfield (Glasgow) machine, before transferring to Motherwell, and ending its mainline career depoted to Toton, in the East Midlands. Now part of the fleet maintained in Bo’ness in Scotland, it is owned by SRPS, and is a well-loved member of this class. We are very grateful to them for making it available to us today.

Direct from the web page of the trip.

Back in the day some of these ‘merrymaker’ type excursions worked in conjunction with local branch line support groups etc., I did a couple of trips in the 80s via the Severn Beach line group, going from Shirehampton up to York and Edinburgh at stupidly low prices (half fare was £4 and £8 respectively I think). I Guess we’ll not see the likes of that again, but still a welcome return for the brand!
