Someone has created an animated map, showing rail services across a typical day. A number of maps are available, including Europe, the US and individual cities like London, New York and Tokyo. Zooming in on the Bern-Basel-Zurich triangle produces some cool visual effects as takt departures converge, then spring back out like fireworks. Trains only seem to travel in a straight line from station to station in many countries, which means a rather peculiar route for London-Paris Eurostars, but this doesn't seem to affect UK domestic trains. Presumably it depends upon the data source. Also interesting to watch the portions of sleeper services converge on each other, and then diverge again.
