Looking to use 1 day rover from Waterbeach station, which is unmanned. Am I likely to be able to buy ticket from machine or will I have to buy on board? Tried to buy via NR & NXEA online, but won't let me proceed.

I'm not sure if the machine has the rover, but if it does not, make sure you buy some sort of ticket for your journey which you can then part-exchange for the rover when you meet a guard or get to a staffed station. Otherwise you might get a penalty fare.

So, Rover is £15, Waterbeach to Ely, where I will change anyway, is £3.90 single, I can then buy Rover for £11.10. Is it that simple?

Should be.

I have to say that if the Rover is not available from the machine then I can't see how you can be PF'ed as you did not have the opportunity to buy the correct ticket before boarding.

The rover is generally available from machines in the area. Of course, whether you can see the screens in the glare at Waterbeach is always a different issue...

I they don't have it, wouldn't you be allowed to buy a ticket to Cambridge or Ely and part-ex it for the rover?

You can. If a TVM does not have the ticket you want, you're supposed to buy a ticket that allows you to commence some part of your journey and part-exchange it with the guard or at your destination for the ticket you actually want. As I said above :)

Stut: Yes you would.
