I'm surprised you used an Oyster rather than a travelcard, all it a bit more expensive (£12) but you wouldn't have the worry of going over Max journey times and be charged extra.

Sounded like a very productive day :)

Oyster is great for bashing once you've done it a few times, and as it's cheaper than a paper Travelcard is it any wonder that I've not bought one in a long time?

The bus journey should have been included in the zones 1-5 cap at £11, but if you are going out to Zone 6, a travelcard is the way to go. Great read.

Always good to hear about folk charging around the capital in their quest for winning units, shacks etc.

Definitely less aggro with a paper travelcard. Even if the gates reject it, the staff seem to be much better at letting you through as they have something tangible to inspect.

Thanks to you all for the comments on the report. As to regards to best ticket I still believe the Oyster Card is the better and cheaper option, especially for the runs I was doing.

You have 2 types of travel card, Day anytime and Day off peak travel cards and don't forget, like Manchester London operates an evening peak between 1600 and 1830 if my memory serves me right were the off peak travel card is not valid. Were the price cap on the Oyster card is £11 for zones 1-5 whether it is peak or off peak period. Even going out to zone 6 the Oyster Cap is the cheaper option at £11.80, again whether it is peak or off peak compared to the travel card which is £17.20 peak travel card or £12.10 off peak travel card. These daily caps only relate to Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail and National rail services zone 1-9. See the Oyster Cap link below for full details.

As to Buses and trams they work slightly differently. Unlike the forms of transport mentioned above were you tap in and out (once you have completed your journey so an example journey from Lewisham to Upminster would be - Tap in at Lewisham on the DLR and travel to West Ham, transfer to a tube train to Barking where you then transfer to c2c to Upminster and tap out then) and with the buses and trams you only tap in and are charged a flat rate of £1.50 no matter the length of your journey, once you have completed 3 journeys (£4.50) all other journeys are free but you still have to tap in so these fares fall outside of the zonal capping, hence why it cost me £11.00 on tube/DLR for the day and £1.50 on the bus, again a link to the info on bus and tram fares are below.

Finally, I've included a link to the maximum Journey Times allowed below as well and to be honest it gives you sufficient time to do a run but once you have tapped out you need to give it 10-15 minutes before trying to tap back in otherwise you will encounter the problem I did at Barking so plan it to go and have a cup of tea or something a little bit stronger.

As you can tell I can be a bit of a nerd or geek with things like this. Happy travelling :D

Being a worker on the buses I travel free on the London system, however I'm fairly sure that the £12.10 Zones 1-6 off peak paper travelcard is after 0930 and has no restrictions on the tube/bus. I know Northern have imposed evening peak restrictions in the north, but I'm sure the £12.10 travelcard is anytime after 0930.

Good read. Inspired my trip yesterday. I always use a paper travelcard. Too mush hassle touching in/out correctly and then cap doesn't work properly. The way I see it once you hit the cap it should ignore any touch in/outs you missed but it doesn't and carries on taken money off you. Anyway an off peak travel card is definitely not restricted in the evening peak as James stated above.

Time for a cheeky unplanned in advance day out although with plenty of planning early this morning. My aim is to knock off quite a few Northern units, hence the name, along with a few significant others. Armed with gen for what should be working around Manchester today (all will become clear further in this report, all I will say is that I am excited) I head out to the tram stop and purchase a tram/train rover ticket for £7.90 and as I am waiting for the ticket to print a tram pulls out and heads for Manchester, never mind the PIS says it is only another 6 minutes for the next tram.....it lied it ended up being 13 minutes so when my tram eventually arrives it is formed of a dud double tram 3003 and 3035 and I jump on the latter.

At Piccadilly Gardens I am changing trams for Manchester Victoria and as we pull into the platform 3108 a tram for Rochdale via Victoria pulls out just as the doors on my tram are released! What about an integrated public transport system? They can’t even do it on the tram network! Anyhow trams come and go and 13 minutes later the next tram for Victoria arrives, and by the way the following tram for Victoria is only a minute behind! So back to this tram that has just arrived happily to say it required 3104 to take me on to Manchester Victoria.

On arriving at Manchester Victoria I have ample time to get some breakfast from McDonald’s, unfortunately no Greggs in a close proximity so I have to make do. Breakfast eaten and armed with the coffee from McDonald’s I head to the platform and await the 0923 to Blackpool North for a short hop to the new shack of Salford Central on a good 150110.

At Salford Central I have a bit of time to wait for my train back to Manchester Victoria and continue to plan the day ahead as it all surrounds two specific trains and trying to maximise new units and shacks. My train arrives formed of a dud 156424 to take me back to Manchester Victoria. Once back at Victoria I have about a 20 minute wait for the 1003 to Blackpool North which I will be taking as far as Bolton. The train arrives formed of a dud 150277 and a good 153324. Can you guess which unit I boarded? I settled onto 153324 to take my run to Bolton and the first time to go through the new Farnworth tunnel.... and it was a bit of an anti climax to be honest.

At Bolton you could see the new interchange seems to be coming well and I don’t have long to wait for my next train, although in the cold and wet it seems an age, when a pair of dud 185’s arrive to take me to Manchester Oxford Road so on board 185141 I get and we start our journey.

At Manchester Oxford Road I leave this service and wait for the first of two services that today was built around when a pair of TPE 185’s arrive formed of a dud 185122 and my penultimate 185 in the guise of 185127 to take me onto Stalybridge.

Stalybridge arrives and I cross to the Manchester bound platform, not before getting a photo of 185127, and grab a cup of tea from the kiosk in the waiting room. I have to say this is a cracking little kiosk were a tea cost £1. On the whole Stalybridge is a great little station with the kiosk on one platform and a pub on the other you can not really go wrong. I’m heading back to Piccadilly on board the 1152 to Liverpool which is dud 185104 and standing room only.

My next trip from Manchester Piccadilly when I arrive should be a 9 minute wait, however my next train ended up departing 4 minutes late which was an issue as at my next stop it should be a 5 minute wait and it is an hourly service, this could have catastrophic event on the remainder of the day. So at Piccadilly I board good 319376 in in trepidation as to what will happen for a run out to a new shack in the form of Burnage, on arrival it is just two minutes until my return trip is do and you have steps and a long slope to go down then under the bridge, as was there when I heard the train running into the platform where then followed a run up the opposite slope and a flight of steps, two at a time to dive into the waiting dud 323239 totally out of breath, totally knackered. That is now all the stations done on the Styal line between Piccadilly and the Airport. If any one says that Spotting can’t be an energetic event I’d kindly put them right after 5 minutes of panting I got my breath back.

Back at Piccadilly I have a leisurely 8 minutes for my next train....aah, heaven! I stroll over from platform 8 to 14, even having time to take a few photos and wait a few minutes for a very short hop to Manchester Oxford Road on a good 175001 where I will wait for the next 319 to the airport.

On arriving at Manchester Oxford Road we are on the island platform and there on the opposite platform is another Arriva Trains Wales 175, so I very quick check I find it to be 175101, another required unit going to Manchester Piccadilly so another cheeky unit in the book.

At Piccadilly I remain on the same platform to pick up the 319 to the Airport that I was going to pick up at Oxford Road and it was a good 319368 to take me to Manchester Airport, once there I need a PNB before heading for my next train which is only an eight minute turn around from my arrival . So my next good unit is the Northern unit 156428 which is covering the TPE Blackpool service.

Back at Manchester Piccadilly it is time for lunch and after a quick visit to Greggs for one of their healthier sandwiches and fruit from Sainsbury’s it is back to the platform and if my gen is correct the fanfare train of the day, and it is. The 1406 to Manchester Airport rolls in and is formed of my last 185 needed for haulage and in doing so my last train of the TPE fleet and I board 185145 for a sense of satisfaction journey back to the airport, of course the obligatory photo was taken of the unit to mark this event.

At the Airport I board 156420, which along with 156455 is forming the 1429 TPE service to Blackpool North. So how do you top just clearing your 185’s? You can’t, so time to change tact, time to do some shack bashing and in doing so if I get a few units so be it, and again if my gen is right I will do. So I remain on the 156420 until I get to Salford Crescent and head towards Victoria.

Back at Victoria I don’t have long to wait for my next train to arrive, although it stands in platform 1 for over 10 minutes and is formed of good 150117 which is going to take me to the new shack of Moston.

At Moston I have over 20 minutes to wait for my return trip on a wet and dreary Saturday afternoon, but it is worth it as it is another shack heading towards my 1000th station (okay, I still have 190+ to get there but it is getting me closer). A dud 158752 arrives on time to take me back to Manchester Victoria, on arriving at Victoria the gen told me the next stopping service to Mills Hill which would be a required 150 however dud 158855 turned up, the first time today my gen had been wrong. So I was now turned 4pm and seeing I was on nights tonight I thought I would give Mills Hill a miss until next time and head off home. I made my way to the tram stop and picked up a dud 3042 that was heading to East Didsbury along with 3048 as far as Deangate-Castlefield where I had to change for the Altrincham line to a dud 3040.

NEW SHACKS
Burnage, Moston, Salford Central.

NEW UNITS
3104, 150110, 150117, 153324, 156428, 175001, 175101, 185127, 185145, 319368, 319376.

Many congratulations on the 185s good sir!

Rather decent day out all in all, plenty of scores as well as more shacks falling.

I really need to find my stations spreadsheet and get it back up to date, I want to know how close to 1,500 I am!

A productive afternoon with a few overnight trips planned, I'm calling it "The 3 Capitals":

29/02 - 01/03: Cardiff, well where else could I be? I won't be able to be in Cardiff on this date for another 4 years and also the second day is St. Davids Day...Zero Degrees here I come, for those who haven't heard of Zero Degrees you are missing out. Went there the last time I stayed in Cardiff. Weird pizza concoctions (I had Hoisin Duck Pizza last time) and a beer from their own micro brewery.

29/03-30/03: London, two day trip to knock of more tube stuff and other bits and bobs, plenty of stations and units required. Travel card booked for the first day, thanks everyone for the advice on this.

24/05-25/05: Edinburgh, bit of a distance to go for a day, plus I want to do the 68's up here and maybe set off early on the second day with a cheeky trip to Dundee?

:D:D:D

The future trips sound well interesting, I look forward to hearing about them!

Already got a trip planned for Newcastle for later in the year as I have never done the Tyne & Wear Metro!!!:D

Bleary-eyed Lancashire Day Ranger – Monday 8th February 2016

Having just finished my stint of nights I decided to stay up during the day to ensure I can sleep well tonight so I head off out on a Lancashire Day Ranger, with gen I had gathered together so I have a plan of attack to knock off more of the Northern fleet, however knowing Northern so well the gen may be out of date within 30 minutes of getting hold of it as they do seem to like to play what I like to call musical trains. How much I’ll get done I can’t say before I have to head home. I now have a goal and have my teeth sunk right into it and can’t see to stop myself and that is to try and clear Northern fleet during the remainder of the year.

So on a wet and cold morning I jump back in my car and head to Sale Water Park park and ride because there is no way now at this time of the morning I would be able to park at Brooklands and it is too wet to walk, so of course I get caught in the rush hour traffic. I was expecting it so it didn’t stress me out and there is always a chance of a high numbered tram on the Airport line. Finally arriving I drive past the stop and notice it’s only 3 minutes until the next tram so I park up pretty sharpish and purchase my ticket and have a minute to wait for dud 3068 to arrive and to take me towards Cornbrook, the tram is already quite busy and it shouldn’t surprise me as it is 8am on a Monday morning. The PIS lady on the tram always tells you to change trams at Cornbrook if you want to head through the city, I never listen firstly because Cornbrook is the coldest tram stop on the network and at this time of the morning it will be sardines by the time I get there.

At St. Werburghs Road I leave the tram and wait for the following tram to Bury that will take me through to Manchester Victoria, again this is formed of two duds 3040 and 3021 so I climb aboard the latter which is already standing room only and was sardines by the time Cornbrook was reached. It soon emptied out though and by the time we got to Market Street I had a seat.

At Manchester Victoria I left the tram and went and purchased my Lancashire Day Ranger and seeing I had just over 15 minutes to wait I thought I would head over to the co-op for a hot sandwich.... none left, so I thought McDonald’s for a bacon sandwich...one person serving slowly, another two just standing around appearing to be doing nothing and time running out so I leave. So you now have a tired and hungry person, I just hope my info is correct. I head for the platform and thankfully it was correct, there sat 153352, my first newbie of the day to take me onto a new shack in the form of Blackburn.

Arriving at Blackburn on time I only have to cross to opposite side of the island for my next train and only have 5 minutes to wait for the 0955 to York to take me to Accrington, which is a dud station but the unit I am on 158787 is not.

The weather is not any better at Accrington. In fact, if anything it is worse and I have 17 minutes to wait for my return journey, luckily there is a Tesco right next to the station and a hot sandwich and fruit was bought and seemed to do the trick and perk me up, coffee when I get to Preston! My train arrived and it was a dud 158849 to take me to Preston, although according to my gen it should have been a useful unit. First round to Northern in today’s game of musical trains.

On my first visit of the day to Preston I didn’t get a coffee, I got a tea and what a mistake. I like my tea with a splash of milk, unfortunately the lady that served me put a dollop of milk in it. Well at least it was hot and I had a bit of shelter from the weather in the buffet bar on platform 1 and 2 while I waited my 10 minutes for my next train which was the 1059 to Blackpool North, although this time I was not going to sunny Blackpool but just one stop along the line (or if you want to get technical it is the second stop from Preston but we didn’t stop at the first, and not many do!!) to Kirkham and Wesham for another new shack of the day.

On arriving at Kirkham and Wesham thank goodness it is only a few minutes to wait as the rain and wind from the outer edges of Storm Imogen was awful (believe the south got hit worse) when dud 150207 arrived to take me back to Preston. I had timetabled it into my plans that I would have got the next train back to Preston in my plans as this was only a 3-minute connection and I was not in the mood to run to the other platform not knowing that this station was an island platform and it served me well.

Back at Preston my plans change, originally I had planned to do a Virgin Trains run on a required unit, however being back early I would have had ages to wait and I spied a needed 319 unit which was departing in 10 minutes time so I proceeded to climb aboard 319371, getting the earlier train from Kirkham and Wesham has really helped as I can now concentrate on the Northern fleet today on the national network.

At Euxton Balshaw Lane (new shack!!!) I leave the train in the pouring rain and blustery wind and head over to the opposite platform via the long bridge and the shelter, by the time I reach the shelter I am drenched through and have a 30-minute wait for my service back. To pass the time in the draughty shelter I play a bit on Candy Crush (still hooked on it) and ate the Satsuma I had got earlier in the day at Accrington. You never would have thought that eating a Satsuma could be engaging did you? Well neither did I until today and it took my mind of the cold for 5 minutes, after finding a pip in each of the first two segments of the Satsuma I decided that if I found anymore and seeing there was no one else around (and to be honest who in their right mind would be stood on a platform in blustery winds and heavy rain!) I decided that should I find any more pips I would spit the out as target practice to get them through the gap between the window and the roof…I found a pip in all but two of the remaining segments. I’ll have to remember this game for the future, and by the way before anyone asks I scored with all but two of the remaining pips ;). Now, back to the matter in hand and the reason I am stood on this platform on this day and a dud 319369 arrived to take me back to Preston and I didn’t care it was a dud I just wanted warmth!

Back at Preston I reluctantly got off the train as I was just getting the feeling back in my feet, so off I trudged and had another 25 minutes to wait for my next train so I just kept walking around to keep warm. I was slightly confused with my next move as the gen I had and the RTT didn’t make much sense so this next trip was a punt. Also I think the Preston automated announcing system was confused too as the destination board was saying that my train was the first train on platform 5 and when I got over there it stated a completely different train on the platform 5 screen, so I went back to the destination screen to check and I hadn’t misread it. Eventually the screens sort themselves out and my train is leaving from platform 5 so I head there and wait for a good 156483 to arrive to take me forward.

At Poulton-le-Fylde, another new shack for the day, I leave the train and I have to say I like this station. An island platform with the majority of it canopied and a little buffet bar where they serve pies and bacon butties and the station is one that is maintained by the local community and I have to say I still will need to come back to this area in the future for other stations and may be for new rolling stock but I have already decided I will visit this station again and buy lunch from the buffet bar. I have a 15-minute wait for my next train and when it arrives it is formed of a pair of good 150’s. With 150115 leading and the rear unit being 150135, I jump on the latter for the short trip to Blackpool North.

Blackpool North station, not a new station, and I can’t think of anything good to say about it compared to Poulton-le-Fylde. Except for a lot of lines means a lot of potential, nothing about the station itself. I have a 20-minute wait until my escape and that comes in the form of the two units I arrived on so I jump on the unit I didn’t travel on to get here and settle in on 150115 where I now have a longer journey that will take me beyond Preston to a new shack.

And that new shack turns out to be Buckshaw Parkway, where it is still raining and windy but at least I have a shelter to wait in for my next train which turns out to be an old friend from earlier today 150207 to take me back to Preston, where I have a bit of a wait for my next train from platform 3 so I visit the station buffet for a warm and a hot chocolate, just what was needed. Time flew and it wasn’t long before I headed back to the platform for 150114 (another red pen) to take me one stop along the line to (also new shack) Leyland where I only had about 5 minutes to wait for my service to Liverpool Lime Street which was formed of new 319369. On my way to Liverpool I pass Tuebrook and am happy to see a couple of 66’s, although I won’t know whether I needed them for sighting until I mark them up with 66712 on an unidentified freight train and 66727 appears to be shut down on its lonesome.

I haven’t been to Liverpool Lime Street in ages and I was shocked to see how busy it was with the 319 units and still needing a few it has given me an idea for a future trip regarding the 319 units and the stations out to Manchester over the Chat Moss line. I’m now beginning to think it is time to head home as it is 1630 and I have not been to bed yet since yesterday and am now feeling absolutely shattered and have done well to last this long, but there in platform 1 is a required 319362 working the service to Wigan North Western but I need to get to Manchester so a quick check of the stopping points I realise it stops at Roby (a required shack) and only 5 minutes behind is a stopping service to Manchester Victoria, smashing! So I jump on the needed 319362 to take me to new shack of Roby.

At Roby I depart the 319 unit and wait for the 5 minutes until my train arrives. It is still raining but the wind seems to have died down a bit now but the shelter still makes a useful shelter until a dud 319367 arrives to take me to Victoria where I started this adventure on the national network more than 7 hours ago.

On approaching Ordsall Lane Junction it dawned on me that this is the furthest I have been on an electric train as in the past I have turned right and gone towards Manchester Piccadilly. I have never been on an electric train into Manchester Victoria before and although I have travelled over the track before I pay a special attention to the section of railway between Ordsall Lane and Manchester Victoria.

On arriving at Manchester Victoria on platform 3 I head to the concourse and I have to say the job they have done on the concourse is spectacular compare to the state it was in a few years ago, it still amazes me every time I go on the concourse, also something else I noticed, I noticed it the other day too is how busy the Metrolink station is at Manchester Victoria, it wouldn’t be amiss to think this was central London with the frequency of the tube network as a tram arrives every few minutes. What is it going to be like once the second city crossing is opened and tram frequencies have increased? Are there going to be enough trams? I hope not. I head to the Metrolink platform and having just missed the East Didsbury tram I have a few minutes to wait, not long because from getting off the train to getting on my tram is only 7 minutes and it is a dud 3059 to take me to St. Werburgh’s Road were I change onto another dud 3061 to take me back to my car at Sale Water Park.

I’ve completed this report the morning after as I was too tired to do it last night, also it gave me time to reflect on the day and I have to say I am a person who thinks you have to go to the West Midlands, Scotland, Cardiff or London for a good spotting trip. Yesterday pointed something out to me and that is that you don’t have to travel far for a good and enjoyable spotting trip. I had a cracking time and came away still needing quite a bit in the line of trains and stations (as I still need 59 Northern units, although a trip to the North East will be required for some of them, this is already in hand ) so until the next time, I can’t wait for a North West trip.

NEW SHACKS
Blackburn, Buckshaw Parkway, Euxton Balshaw Lane, Kirkham & Wesham, Leyland, Poulton-le-Fylde, Roby.

NEW UNITS
150114, 150115, 150135, 150276, 153352, 156483, 158787, 319361, 319362, 319371.

Only 59 MUs with Northern? I believe that's a fair bit less than me, although I haven't counted my requirements by TOC in ages so no confirmation.

Aye it's surprising how you can have a decent day on your local patch, I managed the same on Monday on my own local area. I'd have a serious clearout in your area, that's for sure, and that's just on Metrolink!

Another brill read! I've just noticed that from Liverpool Lime Street to Roby, you apparently got on winner 319362, which was going to Wigan but then got onto dud 319362 from there to Victoria. Just wanted to point this out in case there was a problem with your notes.

Good day out there. I agree with things on your local patch, until you have cleared it all! When there is even one thing to go out for there is always hope!

Just caught up with all of these, excellent reads, you've certainly been busy. Weird that 158787 has been bagged by Tech, yourself and I, roughly all within the space of a week.

J doff my caps to all you lads doing the tube, seems to be the in thing at the moment.

Look forward to hearing about and reading future trio reports.

Fantastic trips there! Just caught up - congrats on TPE and the 185s, your London trip sounds suitably epic & incredibly productive (all those lines cleared in one day? Nuts!) and going on an all day bash after a night at work is an endurance indeed!

Meh, I used to do that all the time! Finish work around 0200, get a lift into town, jump on the train at 0400 and out all day!

Well spotted, it was actually dud 319367 from Roby. I've updated the report.

Towards the end I do think I woke myself up on the train snoring, that kind of told me to go home.

Saying that I then did have the best night sleep in ages when I slept for a full 10 1/2 hrs and for me that is a lot!

Already got a trip planned for Newcastle for later in the year as I have never done the Tyne & Wear Metro!!!::D

Andy any advice I can pass on, feel free to ask?.
2mins walk from Gateshead Metro, Tilley Stone, Wetherspoons. Same street, through the day theres some samdwich shops and if you walk to the bottom of said street, theres a chippy by the name of M&M's.Also in Gateshead, theres a Burger King, Subway, Nando's, Greggs, Pondland and massive Tesco all in the new precinct and through the day a public toilet, near Costa's, which Im sure will come in handy

There's another public loo at Heworth, they dont smelll the nicest but if your desperate. Also at Heworth, theres a Northern Rail train into Newcastle, which you can access straight off the metro platform, at 42 past the hour and one to Sunderland and beyond at 37 past the hour, which you have to go out the metro to access.

Pelaw, you may get the odd coal train, coming through from or too Tyne Dock or the odd Grand Central 180 or HST, parked up in the loop. No more than 10mins walk away, thers an Aldi, handy for a supply raid, a chemist but theres also a cracking takeaway by the name of Jaz n Jays, just opposite Aldi.

Some good pubs near Central Station in Newcastle, the Union Rooms is a Wetherspoons but theres also Tilleys and Bodega, which are real ale bars and the Forth on Pink Lane, is another good one, all within stumbling distance of Central and the Metro.

Thanks for that info 47403.

Next weeks overnighter to Cardiff has been put back a week due to being unable to be away overnight at that time. So instead I am looking at may be doing a Heart of England Rover 3 in 7 seeing I am off for 7 days but I have a couple of questions.

As I started on the railway in the BR days I still have all the travel perks. Can I get this ticket on a Priv?

Secondly how does a 3 in 7 work? Can I buy it anytime and then just enter a date in a box for each day I use it?

Many thanks

If the list that I have is still up to date then, yes, the 75% Priv discount is valid for a Heart of Engand Rover.

You need to state when you want it to start. It is then valid for 7 days but you can only use it for 3. You will have a grid in which you enter the dates as you use it.
