So what are the recommendations for the best Android timetable and journey planning app? Preferably one that works to some extent offline too.

Rail Planner works completely off-line. As such, it's strictly timetable data - no real time running. It covers pretty much all of Europe, so you get some fascinating choices as you enter a station name:
